Weep You No More Sad Fountains
Patrick Doyle Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Weep you no more, sad fountains;
What need [you]1 flow so fast?
Look how the snowy mountains
Heaven's sun doth gently waste!
But my sun's heavenly eyes
View not your weeping,
That now lies sleeping,
[Softly now, softly]2 lies
Sleeping.

Sleep is a reconciling,
A rest that peace begets;
Doth not the sun rise smiling
When fair at [e'en]3 he sets?
Rest you, then, rest, sad eyes!
Melt not in weeping,
While she lies sleeping,

[Softly now, softly]2 lies
Sleeping.

Overall Meaning

In Patrick Doyle's "Weep You No More Sad Fountains," the singer addresses a group of mourners who are weeping by a fountain. The singer tells the mourners not to weep so much because the snow-capped mountains and the sun, personified as "Heaven's sun," are gentle and peaceful. However, the singer's "sun's heavenly eyes," a metaphor for the person they are mourning, do not see the mourners' tears because they are now at peace, "sleeping softly."

The second stanza further explores the theme of peace through sleep. The singer describes sleep as a place of reconciliation and rest where peace is found. They use the image of the sun rising and setting to juxtapose the idea of rest and peace with the beauty at the end of a day. The singer advises the mourners to rest their sad eyes and not to melt in tears while the person they are mourning sleeps peacefully.

Overall, the song is a meditation on mourning and the process of reconciling one's emotions with the reality of death. The singer uses images of nature, sleep, and peace to communicate the idea that mourning is a necessary part of the process but that eventually, the mourner must find peace and rest.

Weep you no more, sad fountains;
What need you flow so fast?
Look how the snowy mountains
Heav'n's sun doth gently waste.
But my sun's heav'nly eyes
View not your weeping
That now lies sleeping,
Softly, softly, now softly lies sleeping.

A rest that Peace begets.

Rest you then, rest, sad eyes,

No lloren más, fuentes tristes
¿Por qué necesitas fluir tan rápido?
Mira cómo en las montañas nevadas
El sol se pierde suavemente
Pero el sol de mis ojos
No ve su llanto
ahora yace durmiendo
Suavemente, suavemente, ahora duerme suavemente

El sueño es una reconciliación
Un descanso que la paz engendra
¿No sale el sol sonriendo?
Cuando justo en e 'en se pone
Descansa entonces, descansa, ojos tristes
No te derritas en llanto
Mientras ella está dormida
Suavemente, suavemente, ahora duerme suavemente

I know everyone want to champion Kate Winslet's version. But this woman's voice is so superb it brings the music to absolute perfection.

I loved this scene so much! Brandon fell in love at the same time with Marianne and her voice. I also liked the moment inmediately after that scene. That glimpse of the solitary melancholic figure of the English countryside gentleman, acompanied by the dog. Almost like a painting from sir Joshua Reynolds or someone similar... Its suits so well with the music then... I already loved Doyle´s work in "The little princess", so it has been a nice surprise discovering he composed the score for S&S

One of my favorite movies ever. RIP Alan Rickman. You are dearly missed. <3

I am a contra-alto and I always get so jealous of the people who can reach such highnotes with such brilliance. It is utterly and completely beyond my abilities.

Love both versions 😍 with the instrumentation, it sounds even more beautiful and enchanting !

Mourning the loss of someone very special. I’m in my room in the dark with my headphones listening to music that makes me feel. This is one that just breaks your heart. Softly softly 😥💔
