Singing in the local church choirs as a boy, studying jazz and classical piano performance, composition, and arrangement, and singing and playing keyboards in the ska band Gangster Politics in high school. Watson left the band after graduating and began to explore other types of music, including electronica and ambient. In 2002, after returning from a trip to Vietnam, he decided to start a four-piece chamber pop group, bringing in bassist Mishka Stein, drummer Robbie Kuster (both of whom he had met at university), and former Gangster Politics guitarist Simon Angell. The group (which was technically a solo project with a backing band) released Just Another Ordinary Day (2003) independently.
In 2001 Watson released his first own solo debut, Waterproof9 and in 2006 his second, Close to Paradise. Early in 2007, Watson was nominated for a Juno Canada's music award in the New Artist of the Year category.
His band's song "The Great Escape" was featured on a third-season episode of Grey's Anatomy.
He co-wrote and performed on several songs on The Cinematic Orchestra's 2007 album Ma Fleur including the opening track "To Build a Home". His "Missing You" remix of Champion's "Guy Doune", from Champion's 2006 album The Remix Album, reached #1 on CBC Radio 3's R3-30 chart in early 2007.
Patrick Watson (the band) also won the prestigeous Polaris Music Prize (Canada) in 2007.

Turn Out The Lights
Patrick Watson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
'Cause I'm not so sure everybody's seeing right
Can someone turn out the lights?
'Cause I'm not so sure everybody's seeing right
Even in the way you try
We can see that your make up was running late last night
Has it been a while
Since you laid beside each other and watched the walls fall down
It's just a smiling crime
Everybody's got a little ugly that's been hanging around
So why don't you come down?
Sometimes you need a friend so you can see it right
In the best of times
In the best of times
In the best of times
Doesn't mean that you can't change your mind
Meant the world to me that you took the time
So we rise
So we rise
So we rise
Into the arms of a gentle brace in time
So we rise
We kind of carry each other with some love sometimes
Oh, so we rise
Don't you know we were all born a little blind?
So we rise
Sometimes you need a friend so you can see it right
Oh, so we rise
Don't you know it's just the skin we were born in?
So we rise
The lyrics to "Turn Out The Lights" by Patrick Watson delve into themes of self-awareness, empathy, and rising above personal struggles. The song begins with a plea for someone to "turn out the lights" because there is a sense that not everyone is seeing things clearly. This can be interpreted as a call for a change in perspective, urging people to question their own perception of reality and examine whether their judgments are accurate.
The lines "Even in the way you try / We can see that your make up was running late last night" suggest that even when someone tries to hide their true self or put on a facade, their true emotions and vulnerabilities can still show through. This may be a metaphorical representation of how people often try to present a polished image to the world, even when they are struggling internally.
The chorus emphasizes the importance of connection and friendship during difficult times. The lyrics "Sometimes you need a friend so you can see it right" imply that having a trusted companion can provide clarity and support. The phrase "In the best of times" repeated three times, highlights the contrast between idealized moments and the reality of challenges we face.
