I Miss Who I Was
Patty Loveless Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Jim Lauderdale/John Leventhal)

They say I seem different now
Hope I'm wiser any how
I've had some time to learn a thing or two
I know the change has done me good
But I don't feel like I wish I would
Sometimes I miss who I was with you

Every time your name comes up
I just smile don't say too much
A button's pushed, my heart gets stuck again
I pray it's just a passing thought
'Cause we both know we're better off
But sometimes I miss who I was with you

Stormy days and sleepless nights
Sometimes we even got it right
Can't believe what we put each other through
In spite of all our chemistry
Some things just aren't meant to be
Sometimes I miss who I was with you

Every time your name comes up
I just smile don't say too much
A button's pushed, my heart gets stuck again
I pray it's just a passing thought
'Cause we both know we're better off
But sometimes I miss who I was with you

Yeah, sometimes I miss who I was with you

Overall Meaning

The song "I Miss Who I Was" by Patty Loveless is a beautiful reflection on the complexities of moving on from a past relationship. The lyrics paint a picture of someone who has grown and changed since the end of the relationship, but who still misses the person they used to be when they were with their former partner.

The first verse sets the stage for the rest of the song, with the singer acknowledging that they've changed and grown since the breakup. But despite this growth, they still feel a sense of longing for the person they were when they were with their former partner. The chorus repeats this sentiment, with the singer acknowledging that every time their ex's name comes up, they feel a twinge of pain and nostalgia for what they used to have.

The second verse adds another layer to the song, by acknowledging that even when things were bad, there were still good moments between the couple. The line "sometimes we even got it right" is a poignant reminder that relationships are never all good or all bad - they're a complicated mix of both.

Overall, "I Miss Who I Was" is a beautifully written and performed song that captures the complicated mix of emotions that comes with moving on from a past relationship.

@thaluvsinsideme I would say if you have three you need to start getting all of them if you like her. I got hooked on her in 1991--real early-still had to go back in time and buy those before then. All her albums are good -most great. Saw her 9 times in concert and she remains my # 1 artist--if you scan through youtube videos, you will be hard pressed to find any negative comments and mostly all people really appreciate her for modest ways , true talent , and of course her good looks. .
