Tristezza moderna

Cento chitarre pagane fanno la fila per me
Trema, mio bel Valentino
Quel mio nobile istinto rifiuta con sdegno
Il patetico slancio dei tuoi sette spiriti
(C'era una volta chi c'era)
Trema, mio bel Valentino
Chi diavolo sei?" tristezza in persona
Valentino lo sa tristezza moderna
Meglio una anonima
E gelida notte di infedeltà
Trema, mio bel Valentino
The lyrics of Patty Pravo's song "Tristezza moderna" delve into themes of love, betrayal, and personal identity, presented in a poetic and enigmatic manner. The opening lines set a somber tone by describing love as a "stupid game" that is a killer of humanity. This could be interpreted as a commentary on how love can sometimes lead to destructive behavior and emotional turmoil. The reference to "Cento chitarre pagane fanno la fila per me" suggests a sense of longing or desire, with the imagery of a hundred pagan guitars waiting in line possibly symbolizing a yearning for something unattainable or forbidden.
The mention of "mio bel Valentino" adds a personal touch to the lyrics, invoking the image of a romantic figure who is rejected by the singer's noble instincts. The repetition of "tremble, my beautiful Valentino" hints at a sense of foreboding or apprehension, as the singer resists the allure of Valentino's charms. The lines "melodrammatici / Riassunti di un amore" suggest that the relationships depicted in the song are dramatic summaries of love stories that unfold between hearts and cities, spanning from South Africa to the museum of heroes.
As the song progresses, the lyrics touch on themes of infidelity and disillusionment in love. The lines "Meglio una anonima / E gelida notte di infedeltà" convey a sense of resignation to the cold comfort of an anonymous night of betrayal. The repeated references to Valentino throughout the song underscore his significance as a central figure representing a particular kind of modern sadness or melancholy. The questioning "Tu chi sei? / Chi diavolo sei?" adds a layer of uncertainty and existential contemplation, as the characters grapple with their identities and emotions.
The final lines of the song bring the focus back to Valentino, emphasizing his awareness of the modern sadness that pervades the narrative. The repetition of "Valentino lo sa" serves as a haunting refrain, suggesting that Valentino is not only a character within the story but also a symbol of a deeper understanding or acknowledgment of the complexities of love and loss. Overall, Patty Pravo's "Tristezza moderna" weaves together introspective lyrics and evocative imagery to explore the bittersweet nature of human emotions and relationships in a contemporary context.
