Carol of the Bells
Patty Sandi Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hark, how the bells, sweet silver bells
All seem to say, throw cares away
Christmas is here, bringing good cheer
To young and old, meek and the bold

Ding-dong ding-dong, that is our song
With cheerful ring, all caroling
One seems to hear words of good cheer
From everywhere, filling the air

Oh, how they pound, raising the sound
O'er hill and dale, telling their tale
Gayly they ring while people sing
Songs of good cheer, Christmas is here

Merry, Merry, Merry, Merry Christmas
(Merry Christmas)

Hark, how the bells, sweet silver bells
All seem to say, throw cares away
(The bells seem to say, throw cares away)

Christmas is here, bringing good cheer
To young and old, meek and the bold
(Meek and the bold)
(To young and old)

One seems to hear words of good cheer
From everywhere filling the air

Oh, how they pound, raising the sound
(Oh, how they pound)
O'er hill and dale, telling their tale
Gayly they ring while people sing
Songs of good cheer, Christmas is here

Merry, Merry, Merry, Merry Christmas

On, on they send, on without end
Their joyful tone to every home
(On without end, their joyful tone to every home)

Gayly they ring while people sing
Songs of good cheer, Christmas is here

Merry, Merry, Merry, Merry Christmas
(Merry, Merry, Merry, Merry Christmas)

Merry, Merry, Merry, Christmas

Hark, how the bells, sweet silver bells
All seem to say, throw cares away
Christmas is here, bringing good cheer
To young and old, meek and the bold

One seems to hear words of good cheer
From everywhere, filling the air

Oh, how they pound, raising the sound
O'er hill and dale, telling their tale
Gayly they ring while people sing
Songs of good cheer, Christmas is here

(Merry, Merry, Merry, Merry Christmas)
Merry, Merry, Merry, Merry Christmas

On, on they send, on without end
Their joyful tone to every home

(On, on they send, on without end)
(Their joyful tone to every home)
(Hear the bells, aah)

Hark, have a bell, sweet silver bells
Joyfully ring, boy is the king

Till the bells ring, Christ the Saviour is born
Alleluia

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Patty Sandi's song "Carol of the Bells" describe the joyous atmosphere of Christmastime as represented by the cheerful sounding bells. Starting with the sweet and delicate silver bells that seem to invite listeners to throw away their worries, the song goes on to paint a picture of the entire world being filled with words of good cheer. The bells seem to pound and raise the sound, telling their tales of Christmas to everyone, while people sing songs of good cheer. The song also acknowledges the young and old, the meek and bold, who are all brought together by the joy of this season.

As the song progresses, the bells seem to continue spreading their joyful tone to every home, reminding us all that Christmas is the time when the boy king is joyfully welcomed. Sandi does such a phenomenal job on this song. It’s just remarkable. I love her so much and she was such an inspiration to me and my becoming a singer in church. I used sing her songs in church along with Larnelle Harris and Steve Green’s.
