Although Liam Howlett is known for using loads of samples, in this case the main guitar riff was played by Jim Davies, who also played on Firestarter. There are at least 4 samples in the song though.

This really was a fantastic tutorial! The track was for the longest time my #1 Prodigy hit, but seeing the details that went into reproducing the opening sound, gave me a new perspective on it. I thought your presentation was extremely clean, and if this is not how you normally do things - consider mirroring this on future vids. I'll definitely be checking out more of your channel as a result!

I don't know if it's just me but I really dislike unfilterted saw waves, with every synth you open almost the init patch will be a saw wave. I've actually gotten into the habit with most synths that before I even press a key I will close the filter a bit

This is pretty amazing. I didn't think this was possible to recreate a sound like that so closely with just synths. I've been trying to experiment a lot with creating these in between sounds between a guitar and synth and this is going to help a lot with that. Could you do more videos where you try to go for distorted guitar sounds with synths? I rarely see any good guides on this.

Great work! I’m not anywhere near this kind of skill and control of my sound design. Listening REALLY closely to the original I feel that there could be a bit more presence of the overtone fifth, and there is also a small click right at the end of almost every beat (on the last 16th note, like a pick-up both musically and like a record player).

Sounds pretty close I’d say . One small tip : I got ahold of the latest Korg Edition 3 update and after exploring the presets on the Prophecy I found a lot of “ Prodigy sounds “ including the distorted 303 from Poison . Cheers

Note for anyone too broke for Serum the free version of Vital can do all of this and sounds great in it’s own right.

Sounds close enough! But i think in the original you can clearly hear that it has some sort of lfo on the filter and not velocity modulation, like a 1/4 square lfo to open and close the filter

Prodigy's guitarist is called Gizz Butt. he was definitely in the band during this era (Fat of the land album ) so i think its going to be a guitar through pedals and not a sample or a sample of him playing a riff.

However this synth part is really close 👍👍

I always thought that, rather than lots of short punchy notes, it was fewer sustained notes with an LFO/cycling envelope applied to them.

Jimm Pavloff did some cool remakes of songs from Prodigy and he did it pretty well cause he used the original samples that he sampled his self out of their original tunes.

Great work. Absolutely amazing reverse "engin'hearing"(did I just invent that?) If anything, I think your fx are a bit too wet, compared to the original. (with emphasis on a bit). I think what is heard on the original is noise, not tail from a verb. The original sounds very dry. It might just be your room that makes the difference. Give it a listen on headphones. Anyways, genius work!

@xisotopex sorry, no i wrote that while i was listening. i assumed the notes rhythms/pitches of the melody were being sequenced into a custom lfo inside of serum, but i now realize he actually recorded them into ableton -

i dont have ableton so i went into my copy of serum and tried doing the effects in there as close as i could get it. i never tried doing motion sequencing for that sound yet [holding a note down and getting the melodic line and per-note adsr, and note rhythms from the song]. so i havent gotten that attack thingy it does to happen yet. serum can be tricky to do that with sometimes. [dragging the line around so it matches where you wanna have the note accent hit as it sequences]

I now realize my previous comment didnt really make sense. but yeah i was wondering how to do that, inside of serum because im a bit lazy with that layout, and because i dont yet have ableton. Ive thought about getting it.
