Hildebrand and Jackson were attending Howard Payne College in Brownwood, Texas in 1962 when a local DJ asked listeners to come to the studio and sing their songs to help the American Cancer Society. The duo sang a song called "Hey Paula," which Hildebrand wrote, and were encouraged by everyone in town to make a record of it.
Shelby Singleton of Mercury Records eventually signed them, but not before changing their professional name (Singleton reasoned that a pair named Ray and Jill singing about "Hey, hey Paula" and "Hey, hey Paul" didn't quite make sense). The pairing of Paul & Paula was credited with inspiring other famous male/female pairings down the line, mostly from record companies that had originally turned the duo down in 1962: Jerry Butler was quickly paired with Betty Everett, and Marvin Gaye was paired with a number of female partners before Motown finally settled on Tammi Terrell.
The duo put out two regular albums and a Christmas-themed album after the success of "Hey Paula", which sold over two million copies in early 1963, charting to N1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the entire month of February. Their follow-up, "Young Lovers," reached N6 on the Billboard charts later in 1963.
In 1965, Hildebrand left the act to complete his college education, having decided that a future in show business was not for him. He made this decision in the middle of a Dick Clark Caravan of Stars road trip, and Clark had to fill in at the last minute.
Jackson went on with a solo career and Hildebrand returned to singing in the 1980s in the Christian duo Land & Hildebrand.
Subsequently, the duo got together from time-to-time to sing as "Paul and Paula" for special events.
Jingle Bell Rock
Paul & Paula Lyrics

On a one-horse open sleigh,
Over the fields we go,
Laughing all the way;
Bells on bob-tail ring,
Making spirits bright,
What fun it is to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight
Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh
A day or two ago,
I thought I'd take a ride,
And soon miss fanny bright
Was seated by my side;
The horse was lean and lank;
Misfortune seemed his lot;
He got into a drifted bank,
And we, we got upsot.
Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way!
What fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.
A day or two ago,
The story I must tell
I went out on the snow
And on my back I fell;
A gent was riding by
In a one-horse open sleigh,
He laughed as there
I sprawling lie,
But quickly drove away.
Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way!
What fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.
Now the ground is white
Go it while you're young,
Take the girls tonight
And sing this sleighing song;
Just get a bob-tailed bay
Two-forty as his speed
Hitch him to an open sleigh
And crack! you'll take the lead.
Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way!
What fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.
The lyrics to Jingle Bell Rock by Paul & Paula describe a fun-filled adventure of riding a one-horse open sleigh while dashing through the snow. The song starts with a depiction of a joyous ride through the fields, with bells on the bob-tail ringing and making the spirits bright. The thrills of riding and singing a sleighing song add to the fun of the experience. The chorus "Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way! O what fun it is to ride In a one-horse open sleigh" further emphasizes the excitement of the ride.
The second verse tells a comical story of a ride with a girl named Fanny Bright. The horse was lean and lank, and it got into a drifted bank, causing them to get upsot. The playful nature of the lyrics continues in the third verse where the singer falls on the snow, and a gentleman riding a one-horse open sleigh passes by and laughs at him.
Finally, the song encourages listeners to go on a ride with their loved ones and sing the sleighing song. The lyrics describe the ideal horse with a two-forty speed, hitched to an open sleigh, and taking the lead with a crack.
Overall, Jingle Bell Rock is a fun, light-hearted song that has become a Christmas classic for many. Its lyrics evokes the spirit of the holiday season, with its fun-filled and adventurous nature.
