The Island
Paul Brady Lyrics

The Island (Paul Brady)

They say the skies of Lebanon are burning.
Those mighty cedars bleeding in the heat.
They're showing pictures on the television.
Women and children dying in the street
And we're still at it in our own place.
Still trying to reach the future through the past.
Still trying to carve tomorrow from a tombstone...

Chorus

But Hey! Don't listen to me!.
This wasn't meant to be no sad song.
We've heard too much of that before.
Right now I only want to be here with you.
Till the morning dew comes falling.
I want to take you to the island.
And trace your footprints in the sand.
And in the evening when the sun goes down
We'll make love to the sound of the ocean

They're raising banners over by the markets
Whitewashing slogans on the shipyard walls
Witchdoctors praying for a mighty showdown
No way our holy flag is gonna fall
Up here we sacrifice our children
To feed the worn-out dreams of yesterday
And teach them dying will lead us into glory...

Repeat chorus

Now I know us plain folks don't see all the story.
And I know this peace and love's just copping out.
And I guess these young boys dying in the ditches.
Is just what being free is all about.
And how this twisted wreckage down on main street.
Will bring us all together in the end.

And we'll go marching down the road to freedom....
Freedom

Overall Meaning

Paul Brady's "The Island" is a song that speaks of the struggles that exist all over the world. The first verse speaks of the problems that parallel between Lebanon and their 'burning skies', and the everyday struggles that are facing certain parts of Ireland. It points out that even with the struggles that we face and the terrible things that are happening, we're still searching for the future through our past experiences. The chorus offers an escape from the grim reality of problems facing the world, telling us to come away and soak up the beauty we do have. The second verse advances how protests occur across Ireland and how its society has deep-rooted traditions that are harmful to the present generation, adding that people are willing to die to carry on such outworn rituals.

This song can deeply relate to everyone, as it addresses the hypocrisy of a society that is continually trying to better itself. The song shows the problems and sufferings of the people all around the globe but, at the same time, offers the power of unity creating hope and dedication that makes the empowerment of freedom seem attainable.

I love Ireland and Irish people, they suffered a lot until they got their liberty and freedom. It’s a beautiful song and took me back to sad moments. Hamza, Yemen

Kind words, but live here and it's not so easy for both sides, I don't know if we have freedom or from what. I was born here and still live here. Proud to be Irish and British.

@@andyarmstrong1493 You can’t be both.

@@jbm1980 Ronan, 1.9 million people born in Northern Ireland might disagree with you. As would the Irish and British governments and my Irish and British passports.

Irish and proud. No freedom like you think but for the moment the people are living free. There is still a divide and there is still British rule in Northern Ireland 🇮🇪 (it is Ireland) and still to this day there is still violence even though a so called peace treaty was signed in April 98. There will never be peace here as long as England continue to occupy our country. Even if and that's a big massive if they gave Ireland back now there would be civil war for the people who still want to call it England when it kind of gives you a hint in the name for the dozey people it's called Northern Ireland 🇮🇪 😉 full 32!

One of the best Irish songs ever written.

@Vegan123

This song could have been written for me.
I served with the Irish Army in UNIFIL Lebannon for over a year.
Been north many times, have many school friends that were 'sent out' due to the pogroms that one one talks about now.
INLA operating openly in North Cork etc. back in the day.
We only know a fraction of what was going on.
I hope the peace will hold.
