High Time
Paul Jones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

High time, long time, day time, night time,
High time, long time, day time, night time,
High time I had such a good time,
My baby stayed a long time,
Now she's gone away,
I must stay.
But I know I'll wait forever 'til we get together.
High time, long time, now I'm small time,
High time every day was sunshine,
You got to last a long time,
I've seen the last of you, I'm telling you,
I'm not gonna let you get me,
I know she won't forget me,
High time, now I'm in between time.

Baby come back, baby come back
Your daddy will wait forever for you,
Baby come back, baby come back,
Your daddy is here and there's nothing to fear.

Ooh! High Time! Soon we're gonna be in big time,
The greatest girl of all time, is coming back to me,
And you'll see,
We're have a high time together making love forever

High time, long time, day time, night time
High time, long time, day time, night time

Mmm high time, long time, day time, night time,
I'm telling you high time, long time etc.

Overall Meaning

In "High Time," Paul Jones sings about the emotional highs and lows of a romantic relationship. The repetition of "high time, long time, day time, night time" creates a sense of time passing and the ups and downs that come with it. The singer is yearning for his lover to return, saying that he'll wait forever for her. He's confident that they will have a great time together once she does come back, and that they'll make love forever.

The song seems to be about a relationship that has had its share of difficulties. The line "Now she's gone away, I must stay" suggests that the singer was left behind while his lover went off somewhere. He's in a state of limbo, somewhere between feeling small and wanting to be in the big time. Despite the challenges, the singer is still deeply in love and confident that things will work out in the end.

The repetition of "baby come back" at the end of the song underscores the singer's desperate longing for his lover's return. He assures her that he'll wait forever and that there's nothing to fear. The fact that the song ends on this note of uncertainty and longing suggests that the singer's relationship is still far from resolved.

Now I can see why Paul left the Manfreds. It's because he liked miming -- I can see no other reason. Still, great to hear this old pap after so long. Thanks!

Jeff M.

At Beat Club the Manfred’s did nothing but mimm there!

Bryan Palmer

Most artists and groups of the day mimed on tv pop shows so it wasn't just Paul

Ndlanding

@Bryan Palmer That's true. Actually, in the early 80s, my (unfamous) group played live on the BBC, three songs on a Saturday morning. Perhaps the only group to do so on that show, but the producers got a great (TV) sound despite no real rehearsal. Respect to them (and to our group!)
