1) Paul Kelly is an Australian singer-songwriter, based in Melbourne, and widely considered as an icon of Australian music. He has released music under his own name and as Paul Kelly and the Messengers, Paul Kelly and the Coloured Girls, and Paul Kelly and the Stormwater Boys. His output has ranged from bluegrass to studio-oriented dub reggae, but his core output comfortably straddles folk, rock, and even some country. His lyrics, simply and laconically voiced, have managed to speak to Australian experiences and history perhaps more broadly and directly than any other artist.
2) Paul Kelly is an American composer based in New York City. He is the talent that brings music to the world of film, TV, and advertising. He has been sought after by renowned directors, like Oliver Stone, for his blockbuster films, Savages, Any Given Sunday, Comandante and Oscar-Nominated short film Everything In This Country Must. Glowing reviews that Kelly has received, can be seen in the following from Thom Jurek, Soundings in Film, who say, “His moving sound constructions are full of emotions and moods — not all of them pleasant — and his takes on funk, rock, and blues are not journeyman, but those of a musician who takes these art forms seriously and seeks to represent them accurately in his utterances. Kelly may be a sketcher, but his sketches stand on their own outside the realm of the image,” and Frank O. Gutch Jr, Evolution In Film, who give glowing context to the work of Kelly in the following, “Paul Kelly knows what music is. He knows that it can be a setup, a climax, or an anticlimax. He knows the value of music applied to other media. More than that, he knows music. Not at all unlike a classical composer or even the rock band which plays beyond the fringe, he creates music for a reason.”

Gonna Be Good

I'm gonna be good
I'm gonna be good from now on
I'm gonna be good
I wrote a list, I thought it best
Of all that must apply
I wrote a list, it didn't take long
I'm gonna be good from now on
I'm gonna be good
I'm gonna be good from now on
I'm gonna be good
My sweet brothers, my sisters all
They're standing by
They've been delighted, they've been appalled
I'm gonna be good from now on
I'm gonna be good
Like Big John says in his song
You gotta walk the line
The line is narrow, the line is long
I'm gonna be good from now on
I'm gonna be good
I'm gonna be good from now on
I'm gonna be good
I'm gonna do right from now on
I'm gonna do right
(It's gonna be good, it's gonna do right)
(It's gonna be good, it's gonna do right)
The lyrics to Paul Kelly's song "Gonna Be Good" convey a strong sense of determination and a commitment to change. The repeated refrain, "I'm gonna be good from now on," emphasizes the singer's intention to leave behind past mistakes or shortcomings and embrace a new, positive way of living.
The opening lines, "I wrote a list, I thought it best / Of all that must apply," suggest that the singer has taken time to reflect upon their past behavior and has created a list of necessary changes or improvements. The brevity of the list indicates a realization that the path to goodness is not a complex one.
The mention of "sweet brothers, my sisters all / They're standing by" suggests that the singer's loved ones are supportive of their commitment to change. The following line, "They've been delighted, they've been appalled," implies that these loved ones have witnessed both the singer's positive and negative actions in the past, but are hopeful for their future.
The reference to Big John's song and the line, "You gotta walk the line / The line is narrow, the line is long," adds depth to the message of the song. It suggests that staying on the path of goodness requires discipline and perseverance. The line may also allude to the challenges and temptations the singer must navigate in order to maintain their newfound commitment.
In summary, "Gonna Be Good" is a song that reflects a determination to change and a commitment to living a better life. It acknowledges the support of loved ones, the simplicity of the list of necessary changes, and the challenges that lie ahead.

I first heard this song played on the radio and immediately liked it. Paul Kelly just comes out with really good material and lyrics or ballads. He would be my favourite number 1 Australian artist. I may try to do a recorder version of this song probably on my alto recorder although my descant soprano recorder is my favourite. I will buy the cd rather than buying from itunes to import full size file. Maybe I will suggest to iTunes for option to download full size files.
