Come Together
Paul McCartney/John Lennon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here come old flattop he come grooving up slowly
He got joo-joo eyeball he one holy roller
He got hair down to his knee
Got to be a joker he just do what he please

He wear no shoeshine he got toe-jam football
He got monkey finger he shoot coca-cola
He say "I know you, you know me"
One thing I can tell you is you got to be free
Come together right now over me

He bag production he got walrus gumboot
He got Ono sideboard he one spinal cracker
He got feet down below his knee
Hold you in his armchair you can feel his disease
Come together right now over me

He roller-coaster he got early warning
He got muddy water he one mojo filter
He say "One and one and one is three"

Got to be good-looking 'cause he's so hard to see
Come together right now over me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Come Together are deliberately enigmatic, so any interpretation of this song will always be open to varying perspectives.

The first verse describes a mysterious figure, who is suggested to have religious connotations through the use of the term "holy roller." Yet, the line "He got hair down to his knee, Got to be a joker he just do what he please" seems to subvert this reverence, implying that this figure is a bit of a trickster or clown. The line "He wear no shoeshine he got toe-jam football" is an allusion to the sport of soccer, which is often played barefoot in third-world countries. Taken together, these lines suggest a figure very much outside of mainstream society.

The second verse continues this description of the figure, offering several surrealistic images. The phrase "one spinal cracker" may refer to a person who has the innate ability to create or produce energy or something new (a play on "back cracker"). Paul McCartney has described the "walrus gumboot" as nonsense, yet it's one of the infamous Beatles references. John Lennon claimed that he dreamed the phrase, although some have suggested that it is actually cockney slang for "Wellies." The line "Hold you in his armchair you can feel his disease" may suggest a certain "spiritual disease" that he has which he is infecting his followers, which then again emphasizes his dangerous charisma.
