I feel a pitty that this masterpiece as far as I know hasn't been restored although this 78 rpt sounds quite good!

love the violin here. Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks (from boardwalk empire) do this version perfectly. The violinist wraps the the bow around the neck so it is possible to play 4 string chords (there's probably a technical term for this) and that's how he recreates that distinct violin sound in the beginning.

@Steven Heywood It is called a "Four String Joe." Named for Venuti but he wasn't the only one doing it in the 20s.

I used to have the vinyl album, "Young Bing Crosby," There were a number of tunes with Paul Whiteman and The Rhythm Boys," and this was one of my favorites, and you know, I don't even mind the scratches in the recording...It's like a bit of heaven in my ears..Thank you for the posting...

Recorded April 29, 1927, with a great arrangement by Matty Malneck. Would you believe NINE takes of this were recorded? Two were preserved; this is the one (take 9) that was first issued. Take 7 was finally released on one of RCA Victor's "Vintage Series" LP's in the early '60s...a month later, Frank Trumbauer recorded the definitive instrumental version (with Bix) for Okeh.

With the LP 'seasons' recorded just a few weeks before Bing's death, that marks a 50 years of recording. What a run!

OH how I love this recording ! Popularized by Ethel Waters..then by Bix Beiderbecke ...both closely related with Bing on this recording .

Lang and Venuti often 'guested' on recording sessions in New York. I'm sure the relevant discography is out there.

Yes, but also it came out in the same year as Lindy Hop dancing. I'll See You In My Dreams came out too, and it hit number one in the charts for several weeks. And Lindberg flew to Paris... What a year!
