Thankyou SO much for uploading this album and song which I so love!
As a young newspaper journalist of 21 whose environmental activism started at age 10, I was asked in 1978 to become the fledgling Greenpeace Australia's first coordinator.
A surf photographer friend gave me "Common Ground" as a vinyl record (remember them?) and I all but wore it out: it kept me going through many long days and nights of work.
In 1979 I took a couple of months off work and at my own cost visited the then Greenpeace headquarters in Vancouver, plus offices down the US West Coast.
When some Friends of the Earth crew I was visiting in Santa Barbara casually mentioned they were driving down to LA to see Paul in concert, I leapt at the chance to tag along!
So we and the packed audience got to see Paul perform this song accompanied by a huge female timber wolf providing the accompliment.
She was a big sook (one of several wolves around America who were wolf educators) who lived where we stayed at the Tree People's huge canyonside nature reserve right in the heart of LA.
A bunch of human musos also accompanied Paul at the gig (including several from the Grateful Dead), and I remember we all (including Paul) cracked up when Ms wolf was so excited to see a guitarist she obviously knew come out onto the stage that she leapt on him and knocked him down with big kissy licks of greeting!
She was a BIG healthy girl: I met her when I opened a door and was happily greeted by a wolf who was almost as tall as me!
Thank you so much for bringing me so many happy memories: I am now a white haired 66 year old who is still an active campaigner for environmental and human carer rights!

I wrote this. I was the guitarist in the Winter Consort starting in 1977. David Darling (cellist) had come up with some chords to harmonize the wolf call. Paul gave me that bit of music and said "See what you can do with this." I used some of David's original and built upon it and added the lines for cello and a sax part that compiled some of Paul's improvisatory ideas he'd recorded on a cassette.. It was my first assignment - and that opened up for me the collaborative manner in which Paul worked with, putting this thing with that thing and coming up with something that would be a musical backbone to improvise with. The recording here cuts off before the end. When we would do it live, it would get to a final wolf howl and Paul would get the audience to howl. A real culture shock for concert hall audiences.

I was lucky enough to be howling in the audience at a show in the late 1980s in New Jersey. These musicians provide a unique treasure. Thank you, Paul Winter Consort!

One of the most enchanting, ineffably beautiful music creations I have ever heard. What a profound and noble state it creates...

How amazing this is. I heard this in DC in 1990, it drew me in. I played it always outside. My dog , one day gave answering call to it. magical. Thankful for the backstory now to complete the picture.

Thank you Jim. This piece was an early wake up that music isn't just a human concept. That wolve's would howl in a "key" was the first time I ever considered that music may have predated humans.
