Mattinata
Pavarotti Luciano Lyrics

Già l'uscio dischiude al gran sol
Di già con le rosee sue dita
Carezza de' fiori lo stuol!
Commosso da un fremito arcano
Intorno il creato già par
E tu non ti desti, ed invano
Mi sto qui dolente a cantar
Metti anche tu la veste bianca
E schiudi l'uscio al tuo cantor!
Ove non sei la luce manca
Ove tu sei nasce l'amor
Commosso da un fremito arcano
Intorno il creato già par
E tu non ti desti, ed invano
Mi sto qui dolente a cantar
Ove non sei la luce manca
Ove tu sei nasce l'amor
The song "Mattinata" by Pavarotti Luciano is about the beauty of the dawn, the morning light, and the flowers that it touches. The first lines "L'aurora di bianco vestita, giá l'uscio dischiude al gran sol" translating to "The dawn dressed in white already opens the door to the great sun". The song describes the awakening of nature and the sentiment that it stirs in the soul of the singer. The line "Commosso da un fremito arcano, intorno il creato giá par" which means "Moved by an arcane tremor, the whole universe seems to speak" shows the emotional power that the dawn has on the singer. He tries to share his emotion with someone, but that person remains asleep, and he continues to sing alone, sad and melancholic, hoping to reach her.
The singer calls on his love to join him outside with the line "Metti anche tu la veste bianca, e schiudi l'uscio al tuo cantor!" which means "You also put on a white dress and open the door to your singer". The song expresses that where his beloved is, her presence brings light and love, and where she is absent, light and love are lacking. The song "Mattinata" is an ode to the dawn, to nature's awakening, to beauty, to love, and to the power of emotions.

L'aurora di bianco vestita
The dawn is dressed in white
Già l'uscio dischiude al gran sol
The door already opens to the big sun
Di già con le rosee sue dita
Already with its pink fingers
Carezza de' fiori lo stuol!
Caresses the crowd of flowers!
Commosso da un fremito arcano
Moved by an arcane thrill
Intorno il creato già par
The creation is already appearing around
E tu non ti desti, ed invano
And you don't wake up, and in vain
Mi sto qui dolente a cantar
I am here sadly singing
Metti anche tu la veste bianca
Put on also your white dress
E schiudi l'uscio al tuo cantor!
And open the door to your singer!
Ove non sei la luce manca
Where you are not, the light is missing
Ove tu sei nasce l'amor
Where you are, love is born
Commosso da un fremito arcano
Moved by an arcane thrill
Intorno il creato già par
The creation is already appearing around
E tu non ti desti, ed invano
And you don't wake up, and in vain
Mi sto qui dolente a cantar
I am here sadly singing
Ove non sei la luce manca
Where you are not, the light is missing
Ove tu sei nasce l'amor
Where you are, love is born

English translation
The dawn, dressed in white,
has already opened the door to the sun,
and caresses the flowers with its pink fingers.
A mysterious trembling seems to disturb all nature.
And yet you will not get up, and vainly
I stand here sadly singing.
Dress yourself also in white,
and open the door to your serenader!
Where you are not, there is no light;
where you are, love is born.
Where you are not, there is no light;
where you are, love is born.

I’m a 75 yr old American lady born & raised in US. I sang Mattinata in Italian when I was 5 yrs old at my aunt + uncle’s wedding reception. I’ve loved it all my life and hearing it sung by Pavarotti thrills my heart!
