The Sound
Pearl & Dean Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yesterdays, how quick they change
All lost and long gone now
It's hard to remember anything moving at the speed of sound
Moving with the speed of sound

And yet I'm still holdin' tight to this dream of distant light
in that somehow I'll survive
But this night has been a long one
Waiting on a sun that just don't come

Can I forgive what I cannot forget
And live a lie?
I could give it one more try

Why deny this drive inside, just looking for some peace
Every time I get me some it gets the best of me

I'm not much left, you see

And yet I'm still holdin' tight to this dream of distant light
And that, somehow I'll survive
But this night has been a long one
Waiting on a word that never comes

A whisper in the dark
Is that you or just my thoughts
I'm wide awake and reaching out

It's gone so quiet now
Could it be I'm farther out?

Movin' faster than the speed of sound

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "The Sound" by Pearl & Dean explore themes of time passing, longing, forgiveness, and the search for inner peace. The opening lines reflect on the fleeting nature of the past and how quickly things can change. The singer acknowledges that what is lost and gone cannot be remembered with the same intensity, emphasizing the difficulty of capturing fleeting moments that move at the speed of sound.

The lyrics also reveal the singer's determination to hold onto a dream of finding distant light, which represents hope and a sense of purpose. Despite the long and challenging night that the singer has endured, they still believe that they will survive and overcome their struggles. However, this optimism is juxtaposed with the frustration of waiting for a sun that never rises, symbolizing unfulfilled expectations and disappointment.

The question of whether the singer can forgive what they cannot forget and live a lie adds another layer of complexity to the lyrics. It suggests a struggle with the concept of forgiveness and the internal conflict of living inauthentically to maintain peace. The singer contemplates the possibility of giving it one more try, seeking a resolution to this inner conflict.

The song also highlights the constant pursuit of peace and the paradoxical nature of finding it. The singer mentions that every time they find some peace, it ends up getting the best of them, implying that tranquility is elusive and often leads to personal vulnerability. The repeated phrase "I'm not much left, you see" suggests a sense of weariness or feeling worn down by life's challenges.

The lyrics conclude with a whisper in the dark, questioning whether it is real or just a figment of the singer's thoughts. It signifies the uncertainty and restlessness they are experiencing, heightened by their state of heightened awareness. The line "It's gone so quiet now, could it be I'm farther out?" suggests a feeling of detachment and being disconnected from reality, moving faster than the speed of sound metaphorically as they search for answers or a way out. Overall, the lyrics of "The Sound" delve into the human experience of time, longing, forgiveness, and the constant pursuit of inner peace.

Same!
From the late 90s to roughly 2009-2010 or so, I would go to this Particular Cinema which had been running since the 70s I believe. Fun Fact, Danny Boyle used to go to this Cinema.

And it was Not like the Cinemas we have now.
Nowadays, they're all built within a larger building, but this one was is own building and other business around it were separate buildings and the building was huge.

It made you look to the ceiling as soon as you went inside. The front of the building had a tall section of glass panels in a sky blue Frame. The image would really stick in your head. The chocolates also came in these containers which almost resemble To Go cups but they had the brand of chocolate you bought. I've Never seen that since... And I remember anticipating the Pearl and Dean intro as much as the film itself. It was part of the Cinema experience for me. I couldn't imagine not hearing that theme before a film started on the big screen.

And sometime when I was in high school, the Cinema closed and I had No option but to go to one of the newer ones. There are some good ones I can go to. I can even go to the tallest IMAX in Europe which is an amazing experience.. but they simply Don't make them like they used to so I can't really get that Nostalgia.

And a couple of years ago, they finally tore down the building that had been left for years and there are other businesses taking up the land.

The area itself has always had a lot of businesses around it. You could go there and feel that you've had a proper day out. But it's not the same without the Cinema and the bowling alley that was also torn down.

The mid to late 2000s was real pivotal time in my life, thanks to this one intro. Every time I watch this, I feel like I just took a trip back in time. That's how nostalgic it is.
If you want me to think of how good the 2000s were, just show me this and you'll succeed in making me feel young again.

Cerberus276Gaming Yes exactly :) I'll admit when the 4k sound thing comes on and theres that massive bass drop, I love that. But yeah, it's not the same without the pearl and dean intro.
