The Watchers Mass Part 2
Peccatum Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The watchers; Those who fell

They were set to be
The watchers
Their duty was to instruct
The children of men

Some angels came too close
To their task: mankind
They descended to earth;
Found it's daughters to becoming
Thus condemned
And fallen angels they became

Right side was no longer their place
Nor were they placed on the left
Half divined by birth
Half evil by their sin
They were renamed half-casts

Unlike men their halves did not mingle
But stayed there side by side
Pure -- untouched
Carriers of sorrow

They bred with humans
Thus, their tale never ends

Glowing; pure and cursed
They still chose the earth over again

Overall Meaning

The Watchers Mass Part 2 by Peccatum tells the story of the Watchers - a group of angels who were always meant to watch over and instruct the children of men. However, some of the angels became too attached to mankind, and their duties. They chose to descend to earth and mingle with the daughters of men, which ultimately led to their downfall. These fallen angels were half divine by birth, but their sins made them half evil, and they were renamed the half-casts. They were no longer placed on the right or the left side, they were pure but carriers of sorrow, and they were condemned to be fallen because they chose to stay on earth after mating with humans.

The lyrics suggest that despite their fallen state, the half-casts still longed to be on earth and bred with humans again and again, leaving their tale never-ending. The story of the Watchers highlights the dangerous side of human attachments and earthly pleasures, and how it can lead even the divine to their demise.
