Ichiban
Peelander-Z Lyrics

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Peelander-Z's song "Ichiban" seem to be about a person reminiscing on their most memorable experience during their six years of schooling. Specifically, they recall a school trip where they visited Jigokudani (Hell Valley) and rode on a ropeway, which was said to be the largest in Asia at the time. Jigokudani is known for its hazy white steam and sulfuric scent, and the person remembers feeling excited when they discovered a yellow sulfur-like rock and learned it was sulfur when they asked their teacher. Although they gathered some rocks near a volcano, the person wished they could have climbed further. They were more overwhelmed by the awe-inspiring thought that they were riding on the largest ropeway in Asia than anything else, at the same time realizing how it must have become the biggest one in Asia.

The song seems to capture the feeling of nostalgic fondness, but also a realization by the person that they could have enjoyed the experience even more if certain things went differently. The verses include descriptive details that add to the vivid imagery of the Jigokudani trip - the pungent smell, the rocky terrain, and the grand, unfamiliar experience of being on the largest ropeway in Asia. These details, combined with the singer's wistful tone, suggest a longing for the past and the feeling that such events were once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
