Prayer
Pendragon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All the hatred in the world
Where did it all come from
That man over there, he's the one to blame
He's the one who did you wrong

And if you should ever point the finger
Raise up the glass to humanity
And the footsteps of innocence so weary
Can rest now at the doorsteps of sanity

All the children in the world
With tears in their eyes
Where did they all come from
Standing alone in a world which

They don't understand
And the black hearts all melt away
As the night turns to day
And we say we all want our freedom but

All we can do is hope and pray
'Cause I don't know what we're going to do
'Cause the boy who tried to change the world
Found out that world wasn't ready to change

And we say we've all got the answer but
No-one's ready to agree
'Cause I don't know what we're going to do
'Cause the boy who tried to change the world

Found out that the world wasn't ready to change
'Cause I don't know what we're going to do

'Cause the boy who tried to change the world
Will try again when the world is ready to change

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Pendragon's song "Prayer" address the issues of hatred, injustice, and hopelessness that exist in the world. The opening lines acknowledge the presence of widespread hatred in the world and questions where such animosity might have come from. The lyrics shift to an individual who has caused harm, which sets up a call to action to bestow understanding and forgiveness upon them instead of simply assigning blame. The following stanza then addresses the plight of innocent children who are living in a world that they don't understand, where tears are present in their eyes.

The chorus of the song reflects the struggle that the songwriter is feeling, as they don't know what to do in the face of such anguish and suffering. The lyrics suggest that change is needed, and that prayer is the only option for those who are affected, as they wait for the world to be ready for change. The final stanza repeats the previous message, emphasizing that those who have tried to change the world before will continue to do so when the time is right.

In conclusion, Pendragon's "Prayer" is a powerful song that reflects the pain and suffering of an entire planet. It addresses issues of personal responsibility, forgiveness, and hope for the future.

Been listening to music since I’m ten - nearly 42 years ago. Just never heard of this band but……my current go to favorite being Transatlantic this came up recommended in one of my music apps. These guys got something special - vocals and lyrics are very strong. This isn’t another “ look how fast I can play band” and absolutely no death screams lol. It’s just really sweet melodys with soulful musicians - playing together not at war with each other. I probably wouldn’t have appreciated Pendragon 40 years ago - no Eno or Fripp - nothing close to t shirt material when that bore too much attention. Easy to listen too - I listened through my first listen -
And it seems to get better with time which is my measure. Highly recommended - I won’t
Compare them to anyone that’s never fair and so limiting. Wish I could find their LPs they’re worthy of owning on vinyl.
