Educated at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute, Batalla did vocal work in film and television before becoming a backing vocalist for Leonard Cohen. She subsequently released her first solo album in 1993, and continued to write and perform her own material.
In 2005, Batalla performed several Cohen songs on the concert film and tribute album Leonard Cohen I'm Your Man. Earlier that year, she released Bird on the Wire/the Songs of Leonard Cohen, tribute album with covers of Cohen's songs, thus celebrating his 70th birthday.

To her place near the river
You can see the boats go by
And you can spend the night forever
And you know she's half crazy
And that's why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges
And just when you mean to tell her
That you have no love to give her
She gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer
That you've always been her lover
And Jesus was a sailor
When He walked upon the water
And He spent a long time watching
From a lonely wooden tower
Yes, and when He knew for certain
Only drowning men could see Him
He said, all men will be sailors then
Until the seas free them
But He, Himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
Forsaken and almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone
And you want to travel with Him
And you want to travel blind
And you think maybe you'll trust him
'Cause He's touched your perfect body with His mind
Suzanne takes your hand
And she leads you besides the water
She is wearing rags, feathers
From Salvation Army counters
And the sun pours down like honey
On our lady of the harbor
She shows you where to look
Between the garbage and the flowers
There are heroes in the seaweed
There are children in the morning
They are leaning out for love
And they will lean that way forever
While Suzanne holds the mirror
You want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you think maybe you can trust her
'Cause she's touched your perfect body with her mind
The song "Suzanne" by Perla Batalla and Julie Christensen is a cover of the original song by Leonard Cohen. The song tells the story of a man who is drawn to a woman named Suzanne who takes him to her place near the river, where he can see the boats go by and spend the night forever. The man knows that Suzanne is half crazy, but he is drawn to her and the way she feeds him tea and oranges that come all the way from China.
The man wants to tell Suzanne that he has no love to give her, but she gets him on her wavelength and lets the river answer that he's always been her lover. The song then shifts to the story of Jesus and how he was a sailor who spent a long time watching from a lonely wooden tower. Cohen suggests that Jesus knew that only drowning men could see him and that all men will be sailors until the seas free them. Cohen then describes Jesus as broken and almost human, sinking beneath our wisdom like a stone.
The song ends with Suzanne taking the man's hand and leading him besides the water, wearing rags and feathers from salvation army counters. Cohen describes the sun pouring down like honey on our lady of the harbor and Suzanne showing the man where to look between the garbage and the flowers. There are heroes in the seaweed and children in the morning, leaning out for love, and they will lean that way forever while Suzanne holds the mirror. The man wants to travel with her and trust her because she's touched his perfect body with her mind.
