French neo-soul chanteuse Perle Lama embraced the traditions of American R&B and Caribbean zouk to win critical and commercial success. Born January 20, 1984, in Fort-de-France, Martinique, Lama was just 14 years old when she claimed top honors in the JM Harmony Contest. The prize, a recording contract, yielded her 1999 debut LP, Challenger, with the single "Akwarel la Sé Taw" winning the Best Zouk category at the annual SACEM Awards. The 2001 follow-up, Perle Etc., expanded Lama's musical reach, channeling reggae influences to win two more SACEM prizes, including Best Female Singer. The song "Don't Stop" by Perle Lama talks about the struggle of trying to fall asleep at 5 AM when there's a voice that keeps nagging at the back of the head. The singer brings attention to how frustrating it can be when you've done everything possible to soothe yourself but the heart and body aren't in sync. But despite any worries, the singer is told to listen to their hearts and to just let go. The rap part towards the end talks about finally understanding the phenomenon that was happening. The voice was beckoning the singer to a new, surreal world, where night transformed into a theme and poem. The song ends on a hopeful note, noting that the soul is allowed to be rebellious and the singer invites the listeners to just let go and be carried away by the same rhythm.
