It's the Talk of the Town
Perry Como Lyrics

Can't go anyplace,
People stop an' stare,
It's so hard to bare,
Everybody knows you left me,
It's the talk of the town
Every time we meet,
We don't stop to speak,
'Though it's just a week,
Everybody knows you left me,
It's the talk of the town
We send out invitations,
To friends and relations,
Announcing our weddin' day
Friends and our relations,
Gave congratulations,
How can you face them?
What can you say?
Let's make up sweetheart,
We can't stay apart,
Don't let foolish pride,
Keep you from my side,
How can love like ours be ended?
It's the talk of the town
How can you face them?
What can you say?
Let's make up sweetheart,
We can't stay apart,
Don't let foolish pride,
Keep you from my side,
How can love like ours be ended?
It's the talk of the town
It's the talk of the town.
In Perry Como's song "It's the Talk of the Town," the singer is narrating their post-breakup experience. The opening lines suggest that the singer is avoiding public places because of the gossip about their breakup. Everywhere they go, people stare and talk about them. The repetition of the phrase "It's the talk of the town" emphasizes how much attention the breakup has garnered.
The second stanza describes an encounter between the singer and their ex-partner. Although their heart skips a beat at the sight of their ex, they don't stop to speak. The repetition of "everybody knows you left me" suggests that the breakup was public knowledge before the song's events.
The third stanza describes the aftermath of their wedding. The use of the word "announcing" suggests that there is an element of celebration to the event, but the next line paints a different picture. Friends and relations have given congratulations, but the singer feels embarrassed because of the public nature of their breakup.
The final stanza is a plea to the ex-partner to reconcile. The repetition of lines emphasizes the singer's desperation, and the closing lines indicate that the breakup has affected the community at large. The question "how can love like ours be ended?" suggests that the singer believes the breakup was unnecessary and that they still have feelings for their ex-partner.
Overall, the song deals with the aftermath of a relationship, the public nature of breakups, and how humans deal with public scrutiny.
