All Through the Day
Perry Como Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I sit alone in the golden daylight,
But all I see is a silver sky
For in my fancy I sweep away light,
And keep my image of the sky,
Just the way we like it, you and I.

All through the day I dream about the night,
I dream about the night, Here with you.
All through the day I wish away the time,
Until the time when I'm here with you.
Down falls the sun, I run to meet you,
The evening mist melts away

Down smiles the moon, And soon your lips recall
The kiss I dreamed of all through the day.

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Perry Como's "All Through the Day" create an interesting contrast between the golden daylight and the silver sky. While the daylight is typically associated with the warm, bright sunshine and blue skies, the silver sky represents something different. The singer sits alone, weaving images of the sky in his mind, perhaps suggesting that he is daydreaming or fantasizing about something. The imagery of sweeping away light and keeping the image of the sky as he likes it could be a metaphor for how the singer is selectively focusing on certain things while disregarding the rest. This idea may be symbolic of how people often hold onto certain memories or ideas and build them up in their mind while ignoring the mundane or less desirable aspects of life.

The chorus of the song takes on a more romantic tone. The singer recounts how he dreams about being with someone special, presumably a lover. He wishes away the time, hoping for the moment when he can be with them. As the sun goes down, he rushes to meet his loved one. The evening mist also dissipates, revealing a clear sky. The moon comes out, and the singer's fantasy becomes a reality as he shares a kiss with the person he's been thinking of "all through the day". The song emphasizes the romantic idealism of spending time with someone who means everything to you, and the anticipation and joy that precedes it.

When Perry was on the TV I'd kiss the screen wishing he was my Daddy to sing to me irl:)

@VictrolaJazz

A real beauty! A friend's physician father uncharitably called him Perry Coma.

@fromthesidelines

Perry was used to that- and loved the reference, because he didn't mind making fun of himself. He did come across as a somewhat "sleepy" personality- so relaxed, yet so "lethargic" {"WAKE UP, PERRY!!!"}.

I would amuse myself listening to my Grandmothers 78's this was one of those records!
