Sonata

I hear your haunting theme
And I begin to dream!
You linger, my sonata
In every reverie
You bring your love to me!
Make my dream love stay
When you're gone she fades away!
Sonata, when I find her,
Each tender note you play
Will be my serenade!
Please, play on,
Make my dream love stay
When you're gone she fades away!
Sonata, when I find her,
Each tender note you play
Will be my serenade!
... my sonata!
The song "Sonata" by Perry Como is about the power of music, specifically a sonata, to evoke memories, feelings, and dreams. The lyrics express the singer's deep connection to the sonata's "haunting theme," which lingers in every reverie and brings him love. He pleads with the sonata to play on and make his dream love stay, acknowledging that when the music ends, his love fades away. The last lines suggest that the sonata will serve as a serenade for the singer when he finds the object of his affection.
The song's theme is one of love and longing, with a focus on the transformative power of music. By invoking the idea of a sonata, Como suggests that music can be complex and layered, with themes and variations that reflect the nuances of human emotion. The use of the word "haunting" also suggests that the music has a haunting quality that lingers in the listener's mind, bringing to mind memories and emotions that are difficult to shake off. The lyrics demonstrate a deep appreciation for the power of music to connect us to our most profound emotions and desires.
