Twas The Night Before Christmas
Perry Como Performed With Mitchell Ayres And His Orchestra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
When all through the house,
Not a creature was stirring,
Not even a mouse!
The stockings all hung
By the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas
The children were nestled
All safe in their beds,
While visions of sugarplums
Danced in their heads!
And Mom in her kerchief
And I in my cap,
Had just settled down
For a long winter's nap!
When out on the lawn
There arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed
To see what was the matter!
Away to the window
I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters
And threw up the sash!
The moon on the breast
Of the new fallen snow,
Gave the lustre of midday
To object below!
When what to my wandering eyes
Should appear,
But a miniature sleigh
And eight tiny reindeer!
With a little ol' driver
So lively and quick,
I knew in a moment
It must be St. Nick!
More rapid than eagles
His courses they came,
As he whistled and shouted
And called them by name:
"Now Dasher,
Now Dancer,
Now Prancer,
Now Vixen,
On Comet,
On Cupid,
On Doner
An' Blitzen!"
To the top of the porch,
To the top of the wall,
Now dash-away, dash-away,
Dash-away all!
As dry leaves
Before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle
Mount to the sky.
So, up to the housetop
The courses they flew,
With a sleigh full of toys
And St. Nicholas too!
And then in a twinkling
I heard on the roof,
The prancing and pawing
Of each little hoof!
As I drew in my head
And was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas
Came with a bound!
He was dressed all in fur
From his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished
With ashes and soot!
A bundle of toys
He had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler
Just opening his pack!
His eyes how they twinkled,
His dimples how merry,
His cheeks were like roses,
His nose like a cherry!
His drawl little mouth
Was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin
Was a white as the snow!
The stump of his pipe
He held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head
Like a wreath!
He had a broad face
And a round little belly,
That shook when he laughed
Like a bowl full of jelly!
He was chubby and plump,
A right jolly old elf,
I laughed when I saw him
In spite of myself!
A wink of his eye
And a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know
I had nothing to dread!
He spoke not a word
But went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings,
Then turned with a jerk!
An' laying a finger
Along side his nose,
An' giving a nod,
Up the chimney he rose!
He sprang to his sleigh,
To his team gave a whistle,
An' away they all flew
Like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim
As he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to All,
And to all a Goodnight!"
The lyrics to Perry Como's "Twas The Night Before Christmas" tell the story of a typical Christmas Eve. The mood is set in the first stanza, as the reader is informed that the house is quiet, and everyone is asleep waiting for Santa Claus's arrival. The second stanza shows the anticipation for the arrival of the jolly visitor as the stockings are hung by the chimney with hope.
In the third stanza, the children are sleeping while dreaming of sugarplum fairies. The fourth stanza is the turning point of the story. Suddenly, there's a loud noise outside on the lawn, which wakes up the singer. He quickly rushes to the window to investigate. The fifth stanza describes Santa arriving with his sleigh and eight tiny reindeer.
In the sixth stanza, Santa calls out the names of each of his reindeer before they take off to the top of the porch and onto the wall. The seventh stanza describes Santa coming down the chimney, and he's described as wearing all fur from head to toe. He also has a "stump of a pipe" in his teeth and smoke encircling his head. The eighth stanza talks about the big pile of toys that Santa carries with him, and how he fills the stockings of each child in the house.
The ninth stanza says goodbye to Santa as he takes off with his team again, wishing everyone a Happy Christmas and goodnight. Overall, the lyrics to Perry Como's "Twas The Night Before Christmas" is a poetic story about the excitement and anticipation surrounding Christmas Eve and Santa's arrival.

'Twas the night before Christmas,
On the night before Christmas
When all through the house,
And everything in the house
Not a creature was stirring,
No one was moving
Not even a mouse!
Not even a little mouse
The stockings all hung
The Christmas stockings were
By the chimney with care,
Carefully hung by the chimney
In hopes that St. Nicholas
In hope that St. Nicholas Saint Clas
Soon would be there!
Would soon arrive!
The children were nestled
The kids were sound asleep
All safe in their beds,
All tucked in their warm beds
While visions of sugarplums
But visions of sugarplums
Danced in their heads!
Danced through their dreams
And Mom in her kerchief
And Mom wearing a kerchief
And I in my cap,
And I wearing my cap
Had just settled down
Had just gone to bed
For a long winter's nap!
To sleep through the long winter night
When out on the lawn
When suddenly, outside
There arose such a clatter,
There was a great noise
I sprang from my bed
I jumped out of bed
To see what was the matter!
To see what was wrong!
Away to the window
I went to the window
I flew like a flash,
I ran very quickly
Tore open the shutters
And tore open the shutters
And threw up the sash!
And threw open the window wide!
The moon on the breast
The moon shining on the

New fallen snow
Gave the lustre of midday
Made it bright like midday
To object below!
Letting me see everything outside
When what to my wandering eyes
But, what to my wondering eyes

But a miniature sleigh
But a tiny sleigh
And eight tiny reindeer!
With eight small reindeer

And Blitzen too!"

Up to the top of the porch
To the top of the wall,
To the top of the wall
Now dash-away, dash-away,
Now off they went, running, beating
Dash-away all!
The reindeer away!
As dry leaves
Like dry leaves in
Before the wild hurricane fly,
A wild hurricane's force
When they meet with an obstacle
A strong wind when blocked
Mount to the sky.
Goes high up into the sky
So, up to the housetop
So up to the housetop the reindeer flew
The courses they flew,
Right up to the rooftop they flew
With a sleigh full of toys
With Santa's sleigh that was full of toys
And St. Nicholas too!
And St. Nicholas himself too!
And then in a twinkling
And suddenly
I heard on the roof,
I could hear on the roof
The prancing and pawing
The reindeer were prancing and pawing
Of each little hoof!
Making a loud noise with each hoof
As I drew in my head
As I was pulling back my head
And was turning around,
And was turning around
Down the chimney St. Nicholas
Santa Claus came down the chimney
Came with a bound!
And jumped down with a leap!
He was dressed all in fur
He wore a fur suit
From his head to his foot,
From his head to his foot
And his clothes were all tarnished
His clothes were dirty
With ashes and soot!
With ashes and soot from the chimney
A bundle of toys
He had a big sack of toys
He had flung on his back,
That he flung on his back
And he looked like a peddler
Which made him look like a salesman
Just opening his pack!
Looking through his pack!
His eyes how they twinkled,
His eyes shone and twinkled
His dimples how merry,
His face had jolly dimples
His cheeks were like roses,
His cheeks were red like roses
His nose like a cherry!
His nose was red like a cherry
His drawl little mouth
His little mouth
Was drawn up like a bow,
Was curved like a drawn bow
And the beard of his chin
And his beard
Was as white as the snow!
Was as white as the snow outside
The stump of his pipe
He had a pipe in his mouth
He held tight in his teeth,
That he held tightly in his mouth
And the smoke it encircled his head
And the smoke from his pipe circled his head
Like a wreath!
Like a wreath of smoke
He had a broad face
His face was chubby and round
And a round little belly,
And he had a round little stomach
That shook when he laughed
That shook when he laughed aloud
Like a bowl full of jelly!
Like a bowl of wobbly jelly!
He was chubby and plump,
He was a chubby and plump man
A right jolly old elf,
And a very cheerful, happy old man
I laughed when I saw him
I couldn't help but laugh when I saw him
In spite of myself!
Even though I didn't intend to laugh!
A wink of his eye
He gave a quick wink
And a twist of his head,
And turned his head quickly
Soon gave me to know
Which quickly told me
I had nothing to dread!
That there was nothing to be afraid of
He spoke not a word
He didn't say anything
But went straight to his work,
But went straight to his task
And filled all the stockings,
And filled all the stockings
Then turned with a jerk!
Then turned around suddenly
An' laying a finger
And putting a finger
Alongside his nose,
Beside his nose
An' giving a nod,
He gave a small nod
Up the chimney he rose!
And up the chimney he rose!
He sprang to his sleigh,
He quickly jumped to his sleigh
To his team gave a whistle,
Whistling for his team
An' away they all flew
And off they all went
Like the down of a thistle.
As light as a feather!
But I heard him exclaim
But I heard him shout
As he drove out of sight,
As he drove out of sight
"Happy Christmas to All,
"Merry Christmas to all
And to all a Goodnight!"
And to all a good night!"

Gathered around the little portable record player with my older brother and sister, listening to this each Christmas time of year. What a blessed, simple time in our little family. We didn't need much, just each other and mom and dad, and a few presents for each around the tree we all helped to decorate.

I loved hearing him sing as a kid(1950's), Love hearing him now!
