Brown learned to play piano, trumpet, and saxophone while young. He played in New York with Bernie Robinson's orchestra in 1928, and played from 1928 to 1934 with Charlie Skeets. In 1937 he worked in the band of John Kirby; for several years in the 1930s he worked with Frankie Newton, who was also a member of Kirby's band. Brown and Newton recorded often. In addition to recording under his own name, Brown also recorded as a session musician with Willie "The Lion" Smith, Jimmy Noone, Buster Bailey, Leonard Feather, Joe Marsala, and Maxine Sullivan in the 1930s. In the 1950s Brown's health began to fail, and he receded from full-time performance. You gotta keep on makin' me high
You gotta keep on makin' me high
You gotta keep on makin' me high
If you're feeling sad and blue
Come on and dance with me
I can make your dreams come true
Ladies get up off your seats
Come on and dance with me
Gentlemen get on your feet
Come on and dance with me
Say the word and I'll summon the band
With my hand
Let your mind and your body be free
Dance with me
You gotta keep on makin' me high
You gotta keep on makin' me high
If you feel that you like what you see
Dance with me
You gotta keep dancin'
Cause it's makin' me high
You gotta keep, keep dancin'
You gotta keep dancin'
Cause it's makin' me high
You gotta keep, keep dancin'
You gotta keep on makin' me high
You gotta keep on makin' me high
You gotta keep on makin' me high
You gotta keep on makin' me high
If you're feeling sad and blue
Come on and dance with me
I can make your dreams come true
Come on and dance with me
Say the word and I'll summon the band
With my hand
Let your mind and your body be free
Dance with me
You gotta keep on makin' me high
You gotta keep on
You gotta keep on makin' me high
You gotta keep on
Let your mind and your body be free
Dance with me
The lyrics of Pete Brown's "Dance With Me" present a hopeful message that when you're feeling down, all you need to do is dance to make you happy. Brown urges anyone who is feeling sad and blue to come dance with him, and he promises to make their dreams come true. The repetitive assertion of "You gotta keep on makin' me high" echoes this sentiment that the joy of dancing has the power to lift one's spirits and make them feel elevated. The image of the band being summoned with a hand gesture evokes a sense of magic and is further symbolic of Brown's ability to lift people's mood through music and dance.
The lyrics specifically address both ladies and gentlemen and call upon them to get up and dance. This gender-inclusive language reflects the universality of the message that anyone can dance and experience the joy that comes with it, regardless of their gender, age or background. The repetition of "You gotta keep on makin' me high" towards the end of the song asserts that it's not enough to dance for a moment, but to keep on dancing to keep the feeling of elation alive.
Overall, "Dance With Me" is a catchy and upbeat song that encourages listeners to find joy in dancing.
