Pete Escovedo has been a major force in Latin music since the late 1960's, and his versatility has resulted in success in several areas of music, from Latin jazz and salsa to rock and Latin pop. Growing up in Oakland, Escovedo was surrounded by music throughout his childhood. His father sang with some Latin big bands. Pete played the saxophone in high school and soon switched to vibes. When pianist Ed Kelly needed a percussionist, Escovedo found his calling. He and his younger brother, the late Coke Escovedo, both developed quickly as percussionists and became greatly in demand for gigs in Northern California. With their youngest brother Phil Escovedo playing bass, the Escovedo Bros Latin Jazz Sextet was formed. The group broke up in 1967 when Carlos Santana hired both Pete and Coke for his Latin rock group. After touring with Santana for the next three years (he has rejoined him a few times since), Pete and Coke founded the 14-piece Latin big band Azteca, recording two albums for Columbia. When the band grew to 24 members, it became too expensive to keep together although the music was quite impressive. Since that time, Pete has performed in a countless number of settings including with such notables as Herbie Hancock, Woody Herman, Cal Tjader, Tito Puente among many others. He started using his daughter, Sheila E. in the mid 1970's when she was still a teenager; they first recorded together in 1976 with Billy Cobham and have worked together many times since. Since Azteca, Escovedo has also frequently led his own Latin jazz band, sometimes also including his other children Juan, Peter Michael and Zina. Pete Escovedo has recorded as a leader for Fantasy (co-leading dates with Sheila E.) and Concord (including their Crossover, Picante and Vista subsidiaries). ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Pete Escovedo Lyrics

The light behind your face helps me realize
Will we sleep and sometimes love until the moon shines
Maybe the next time I'll be yours and maybe you'll be mine
I don't know if it's even in your mind at all
It could be me
Is it in your mind at all
It should be me, it could be me
Forever
Wandering through life will love come home to you
And the love you want forever, will they be true to you
Will we sleep and sometimes love until the moon shines
Maybe the next time I'll be yours and maybe you'll be mine
I don't know if it's even in your mind at all
It could be me
At this moment in time
Love's indescribable
It should be me, it could be me
Forever
Easy, ready, willing, over time
Where does it stop where do you dare me to draw the line
You've got the body now you want my soul
Don't even think about it say no go
The lyrics to Pete Escovedo's "Sunrise" are a beautiful and poetic reflection on love, hope, and possibility. The song begins with the singer looking into his lover's eyes and seeing the sunrise. The metaphor is clear - the light behind her face represents hope, renewal, and the promise of a new beginning.
The lyrics then go on to explore the complexity of love, its highs and lows, and the uncertainty that often comes with it. The singer wonders whether they will sleep and sometimes love until the moon shines, implying that their relationship might be fleeting and temporary. However, he also expresses hope that maybe the next time they meet, they could be together forever.
The lyrics capture the uncertainty and excitement of early love, as well as the possibility of heartbreak and disappointment. The final verse brings some caution to the picture, as the singer warns his lover not to take advantage of him or try to possess his soul. Overall, the lyrics are a fascinating exploration of the many nuances and possibilities of love.
