Buffalo Gals
Pete Seeger Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As I was walking down the street
Down the street, down the street
A pretty girl I chanced to meet
And we danced by the light of the moon

[Chorus]
Buffalo gals won't you come out tonight
Come out tonight come out tonight
Buffalo gals won't you come out tonight
And we'll dance by the light of the moon

I danced with a gal with a hole in her stocking
And he knees was a-knockin' and her shoes was a'rockin'
I danced with a gal with a hole in her stocking
And we danced by the light of the moon

[Chorus]

I danced with a gal with a hole in her stocking
And her knees was a-knockin' and her shoes was a-rockin'
I danced with a gal with a hole in her stocking
And we danced by the light of the moon

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Pete Seeger's song "Buffalo Gals" are a playful and whimsical portrayal of a man walking down the street and encountering a pretty girl. The two of them dance together by the light of the moon, and he even dances with a girl who has a hole in her stocking. The chorus invites "Buffalo gals" to come out and dance under the moonlight.

One interpretation of the song's lyrics is that they represent a carefree attitude toward life and a celebration of community and togetherness. The playful and repetitive nature of the song suggests that it is meant as a lighthearted invitation to join in the fun. The reference to Buffalo gals is likely a nod to the tradition of women in the American West in the late 19th century who would dance with Buffalo Bill's Wild West show.

I'm lonesome since I crossed the hill,
And over the moorland valley,
Such heavy thoughts my heart do fill,
Since parting from my Sally.
I seek no more the fine and gay,
For each just does remind me
How swift the hours I passed away,
With the girl I left behind me.

O ne'er shall I forget that night,
The stars were bright above me,
And gently lent their silvery light
When first she vowed to love me.
But now I'm in a prison camp -
Kind Jesus in Heaven find me
And send me safely back again,
To the girl I left behind me.

The song “Buffalo Gals” was written by John Hodges in 1844 and refers to the women who lived in the canal district in Buffalo NY. By the 1880’s, it was said that there were as many as 400 women “of easy virtue” (prostitutes) working in the Canal Street area of the City. Included in the district were 93 saloons, 15 concert-hall dives, and hundreds of dance-hall girls. The street was called “the wickedest street in the world”.

So Mary was being kinda saucy playing that for George Bailey haha.

What a gorgeous time and place to be alive!

@azposse

Great little history lesson, thank you! I'm sure "easy virtue" was not easy livin'.
