Yorn started as a drummer who also played guitar. In 1990, he was drumming for his band in a high school talent contest when someone suggested he sing the Replacements song "Talent Show." That went over so well, a competing band asked him to sing Neil Young’s "Rockin' In the Free World" with them.
He was first recognized when the Farrelly brothers picked "Strange Condition" for their film Me, Myself & Irene.
He has gained increasing popularity following the use of his song "Just Another" on popular WB television show Dawson's Creek.
Another of his songs, Murray was used in the credits of the film Igby Goes Down
The song "Undercover" was used in the first Spiderman movie and appears on the soundtrack.
The song "Lose You" was used in the closing of an episode of House on Fox.

Sittin' low in the back seat of his Cadillac
And Diamond Jackie, oh, she's so intact
As she falls so softly beneath him
Jackie's heels are static
Billy's got cleats on his boots
Together they're gonna boogaloo down Broadway and come back home with the news
Yeah, it's midnight in Manhattan, this ain't no time to get cute
Or, baby, don't walk at all
Fish lady, fish lady, fish lady, she breaks down them tenement walls
Won't take corner boys, ain't got no money and they're so easy
I say, "Hey there, baby, won't you take my hand, move with me down Broadway
I say, "Mama, won't you take my arm and move with me, move with me down Broadway"
I'm a young man, I talk it real loud
I say a young man, I'm gonna walk it really proud for ya
So shake it away
Shake away the city life
Shake away the street life
And hook up to the train
Hook up to the night train
Ah, hook up to the train
But I know that she won't take the train, no, she won't take the train
She won't take the train, no, she won't take the train
She won't take the train, no, she won't take the train
She won't take the train, no, she won't take the train
She's afraid them tracks are gonna slow her down
And when she turns, this boy'll be gone
So long
Sometimes, you gotta walk on
Hey, jazz man
Hey, vibes man
Won't you sing me a serenade
In the deeper blue, you'll be playin' in your parade
So save your notes, don't y'spend 'em on the blues, boys
Yeah, save your notes, don't spend 'em on the darlin' so long
Straight for the church note ringin'
Vibes man, sting a trash can
Listen to your junk man
Ah, listen to your junk man
Ah, listen to your junk man
Ah, listen to your junk man
He's singin'
He's singin'
He's singin'
He's singin'
He's singin'
Singin'
He's singin'
He's singin'

The opening lyrics to Pete Yorn's song, "New York City Serenade," tells the story of two people, Billy and Diamond Jackie, cruising through Manhattan. Billy is perched low in his Cadillac, while Diamond Jackie is right beside him, falling softly beneath him. Jackie's heels are static, and Billy is wearing cleats on his boots. Together, they are going to boogaloo down Broadway and back with the news. They are walking down the promenade like mad dogs, but they have to walk tall or not at all because it's a serious game. It becomes apparent that their love for each other stems from their shared understanding of life’s hardships, and they must work together to navigate them.
The Fish Lady is introduced as a woman who can break down tenement walls, but she will not take corner boys because they have no money, and they are easy targets. Billy tries to convince Jackie to move with them down Broadway, but she is hesitant. She is afraid that the tracks will slow her down. Even though Billy assures her that he will not leave her alone, she is so scared that when she turns, he will be gone. The Jazz Man is introduced as someone who can play serenades to make people feel better through the day. The lyrics emphasize the importance of standing tall and facing fears. It's about living life on the edge and being willing to take risks because, in the end, life is worth it.
