It's Raining
Peter Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's raining, it's pouring, the old man is snoring
Bumped his head and he went to bed
And he couldn't get up in the mornin'
Rain rain, go away, come again some other day.

[spoken:]
"hey I got an idea ... we could all play hide and go seek inside,
Now everybody hide and I'll be it!"

Star light, star bright,
First star I see tonight,
Wish I may, wish I might,
Have the wish I wish tonight.

It's raining, it's pouring, the old man is snoring
Bumped his head and he went to bed
And he couldn't get up in the mornin'
Rain rain, go away, come again some other day.

Five ten fifteen twenty.
Twenty-five thirty. thirty-five forty.

Lady bug, lady bug, fly away home.
Your house is on fire, and your children,
They will burn, they will burn.

It's raining, it's pouring, the old man is snoring
Bumped his head and he went to bed
And he couldn't get up in the mornin'
Rain rain, go away, come again some other day.

Forty-five fifty. fifty-five sixty.
Sixty-five seventy. seventy-five eighty.

Won't be my father's jack,
No I won't be my mother's jill,
I'll be a fiddler's wife and fiddle when I will.

It's raining, it's pouring, the old man is snoring
Bumped his head and he went to bed
And he couldn't get up in the mornin'
Rain rain, go away, come again some other day.

Eighty-five, ninety. ninety-five, a hundred.

[spoken:] anyone round my base is it! ready or not, here I come!

[spoken:] allee allee in free!

Overall Meaning

The song "It's Raining" by Peter Paul & Mary is a traditional nursery rhyme that is known by people all over the world. As with many nursery rhymes, the song is meant to be light-hearted and fun, but if you look deeper, it may be telling a more serious story as well. The combination of the different verses of the song creates a collage of random phrases and images that seemingly have no connection. However, when you dig deeper and analyze the lyrics, there is a method to the madness.

The first verse of the song describes an old man who is snoring because he's bumping his head, and he can't get up in the morning. This verse may be a reflection of the passing of time and how people become less lively and active as they age. The second verse changes direction and includes a wish on the first star seen at night. This verse may be a nod to the power of wishes and hope.

The third verse mentions numbers, counting up in intervals of five, and is reminiscent of children's games where they count aloud. The fourth verse is another dark one, describing a ladybug being warned about a house on fire and children who will burn. The fifth verse is a variation of the first verse, with more numbers added to it. Finally, the last verse is about not being confined to the roles and expectations set by one's parents and instead pursuing one's own desires.

It's fascinating how a collection of verses apparently disconnected can create an interesting story when put together. The song's interpretation is subjective, and different people will have different opinions on what it means. However, a common interpretation is that the song represents the unpredictable and varied nature of life, where things often change and seemingly unrelated events happen.
