Strangers In The Night
Peter Baumann Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Exchanging glances
Wond'ring in the night
What were the chances
We'd be sharing love
Before the night was through
Something in your eyes
Was so inviting
Was so exciting
Something in my heart
Told me I must have you
Strangers in the night
Two lonely people we were
Strangers in the night
Up to the moment when we
Said our first hello
Little did we know
Love was just a glance away
A warm embracing dance away
And ever since that night
We've been together
Lovers at first sight
In love forever
It turned out so right
For strangers in the night
The song “Strangers in the Night” by Peter Baumann captures the story of two people who are complete strangers, yet they are immediately drawn towards each other. The verses speak to how the couple were exchanging glances and wonder on the chances that they would end up together before the night came to a close. The feelings intensified as there was something in each other’s eyes and smile that conveyed a powerful invitation and excitement. Hence, something in the man’s heart told him that he had to have her. Despite starting the night lonely and as strangers, they were transformed once they met each other.
The chorus of the song reveals what happened next. Saying hello to each other led them down a path of warmth, love and everlasting togetherness. The connection between the two people was so instantaneous that it took just a glance and an embrace on the dance floor to unite two people who were strangers at the start of the night. For them, everything turned out right as they found love in each other’s company. Overall, the lyrics are about how chance encounters can result in something beautiful, and it is a testament to the power of love that can bring people together.

Here in Chicago there was a music video channel that had a half hour show in the afternoon after school. This would be “back in the day”. This was on steady rotation. Always loved the song. Still have a 12” remix that I found somewhere.
