Young Folks
Peter Bhorn & John Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If I told you things I did before, told you how I used to be
Would you go along with someone like me
If you knew my story word for word, had all of my history
Would you go along with someone like me
I did before and had my share, it didn't lead nowhere
I would go along with someone like you
It doesn't matter what you did, who you were hanging with
We could stick around and see this night through

And we don't care about the young folks
Talking 'bout the young style
And we don't care about the old folks
Talking 'bout the old style too
And we don't care about our own faults
Talking 'bout our own style
All we care about is talking, talking only me and you

Usually when things has gone this far, people tend to disappear
No one will surprise me unless you do
I can tell there's something going on, hours seems to disappear
Everyone is leaving, I'm still with you
It doesn't matter what we do, where we are going to
We can stick around and see this night through

And we don't care about the young folks
Talking 'bout the young style
And we don't care about the old folks
Talking 'bout the old style too
And we don't care about our own faults
Talking 'bout our own style
All we care about is talking, talking only me and you
And we don't care about the young folks
Talking 'bout the young style
And we don't care about the old folks
Talking 'bout the old style too
And we don't care about their own faults
Talking 'bout our own style
All we care about is talking
Talking only me and you, talking only me and you

Talking only me and you, talking only me and you

Overall Meaning

The song "Young Folks" by Peter Bjorn & John is a tale of two people in love, who choose to ignore the generational divide and other societal expectations to enjoy each other's company. The lyrics explore questions of how much someone's past defines them, and whether our mistakes determine our future. The narrating persona is asking their love interest whether they would still be interested in them if they knew their past mistakes and history, and the response is that it does not matter because all they care about is being together.

The song revolves around the idea of ignoring societal constructs and enjoying the moment with a person regardless of age, background, or faults. The chorus emphasizes this message with the repeated lines of "And we don't care about the young folks, talking 'bout the young style, and we don't care about the old folks, talking 'bout the old style too." They are saying that it does not matter whether you are "young" or "old," as long as you connect with the right person, you can enjoy the company of someone who shares your values and interests, and that is all that matters.

The song was released in 2006 and became an instant classic, receiving critical acclaim and charting globally. It was nominated for two Grammy awards in 2008, and the music video, featuring a playful animation of the band members strolling in the city, became an instant viral hit. The song has been used in numerous films, TV shows, and commercials, and the whistling melody has become an iconic part of its success.

God...

I remember I used to get annoyed at my mom when I was 7 in 2009. I used to get so annoyed at my mom, as she loves this song, and played it all the time. I miss those days. Take me back....

Take me back to a time when I was young, carefree, when I played with my neighbors in and around the neighborhood. When I was in elementary school, playing on the playground. When.. when I was a kid.

Now I'm working a job, almost done with high school, and came across this song In my recommendations on my break. Nostalgia just hit me like a wave when I heard it that familiar drum and whistle.

Take me back.
