Totally agree. She is one of my favorite actresses. And she kept on acting (The Big Valley, where I actually first saw her, The Thorn Birds, to name a couple). We have been so lucky to have her grace our screens ❤.

I'm SOOOOOO glad she was given a totally deserved honorary Oscar, while she was still alive. (In some ways the honorary Oscar is an even bigger win, as it acknowledges true worth. And, she got emails too! Sorry for the gushing digression).

I thought I had seen all the movies from the 1940's but I didn't know about this one. Thank you for posting this. I enjoyed it very much. I am not of the 40's era but in my opinion these are the finest actors and writers of the Hollywood era. So, so much better than what is made today.

The piano music was played by Ania Dorfmann, who drilled Stanwyck for three hours a day until she was able to move her arms and hands to match the music. Stanwick was THE queen.

As I learned in nursing school, drs used to prescribe cigarettes for TB !!! The rationale was that smoking keeps lungs inflated & “exercised”.

Why not? In 1947 you were still probably going to die of TB anyway. Streptomycin had only finished it's trials and become more widely avaibale in 1948, and was in no way guaranteed, even then to save you.

WOW she is going to a sanatorium for her lungs... opening scene she is smoking in the Doctor's office before AND after her lung xray & no one in the xray room wear's any protection from radiation!
I do remember going to the Hospital in the 1960's to see Great Grandma and everyone was smoking in her room, including Grandma who was complaining they wouldn't allow her to use her snuff!! Times have changed a little too late for me, both my parents were also smokers, I was addicted before I was born.

Based on the writing of Erich Maria Remarque, the awesome writer of "All Quiet on the Western Front". Can't help but wonder if the idea of centering the storyline around lung disease was motivated by soldiers who survived gas attacks in the Great War with horribly damaged lungs. The happy ending seems a bit more Hollywood than Remarque, but ..... So wonderful to see the name of this remarkable writer. If you haven't read "All Quiet on the Western Front" since high school, give yourself a treat and look for the book in your local public library or book store. You will not be disappointed! 📚🌍📚

Tuberculosis hospitals were once common, although none of them offered the lavishness of this sanatorium. The Adirondack Mountains used to have convalescent homes and boarding houses that hosted TB patients who needed the pure air. Once a scourge, TB has largely been eradicated with the development of penicillin. Strange how well the staff speaks such perfect English in this Swiss town.

Tuberculosis. It was thought that mountain air would be beneficial to TB patients. There’s a shot in the beginning showing patients outside on cots with blankets up to their chins-for the mountain air. My Dad was in a TB sanatorium back in the 1940s . This was long before antibiotics. My Dad eventually recovered. The doctors ended up performing 3 different surgeries on him. From what he told me it sounds as if they were perhaps experimental? For one of them they used a large needle and collapsed one lobe of his right lung-the part that was infected. They did that every 2 weeks or so for a year

@@j.c.b6473 I saw it when it was first released in 1947, she died while David Niven was playing the piano. Sadly when it was re-released in 1954 they had cut the death scene, and I haven't seen the original uncut film since. Even Barbara complained about it being cut when she watched it on the TV.

I thought it was unethical for a doctor to become romantically involved with a patient, even back then. This is based on an Erich Maria Remarque story. He's one of my favorite authors but I was a bit surprised that the patient was going to marry her doctor.

Have anybody seen the titanic with Barbara Stanwyck,? that is a awesome movie much better than this new one with Leonardo DiCaprio. I was over someone’s house one time and they had that on. That was the longest five hours I ever spent in my life disliking a movie ps this movie is giving me the strange love of Martha Ivers have some of the same music that was in that movie I just noticed, I am the aficionado of old films. I have at least 300 movies just about all of them are black and white

Yes, TB was so rampant back then! It was a movie that my family had me watch as a very important part of history. I don't think anything will ever match it as far as the real story. Titanic is NOT a love story, to me it is still such a tragedy. And then the sister ship going down as well??

A little melodramatic for me but I watched for the two leads and to see Richard Conte in a non gangster role. It is sandwiched between two great performances from Barbara Stanwyck, one recognised for awards and one not, Martha Ivers, but this doesn’t reach those heights and the same for David Niven who plays a debonair doctor but doesn’t reach his performance in The Bishop’s Wife released in the same year. It’s not a bad film though ends a little abruptly so don’t expect a big Endearment ending.

@Moggs If it co-stars Edward G Robinson I have seen it within the last few years and enjoyed it very much. There is another non villain role where he is a trucker and the villain is Lee J Cobb in a Hell Drivers type adventure though Hell Drivers tops every film in that genre Stanley Baker, Patrick The Prisoner McGoohan, Herbert Lom, Sean James Bond Connery, Gordon Cowley Jackson, Sid Carry on James. William Doctor Who Hartnell, David Ducky McCallum. The cast and film are excellent.

Was born with a weak lung. As a teenager I tried smoking. No doctor, not my parents told me this isn't good for me. It was my body itself. Started hardly coughing. So I stopped it for the rest of life. Just listened to my body, no one else.
1 hour walking in fresh air is better for the lung when sitting at the fireplace. Mainly in the snow.

Lovely, elegant film with excellent actors. But sadly the screenplay is so uneven, glossing over many points. I'm sure the actual story by the great author Erich Maria Remarque, would be more satisfying. The themes of time, death, love etc, in the story are somewhat related to the epic novel "The Magic Mountain" by Thomas Mann.

I have just started watching but I find it funny that she is smoking in front of the doctor, LOL. And when he brought up the ashtray to her, I thought he was going to say: can you please not smoke here? but nop, he said nothing and only acted like a gentleman :D
