Ann Harding was one of the most beautiful actresses who moved from silent to talking films. She was gently dramatic and genuine. This film shows her subtle gracious range of feelings. Sort of a faded memory as comedy and rough drama came in vogue. I adore her!

Excellent. Why isn't Ann Harding in the pantheon of movie stars? She and Gary Cooper were wonderful together. I enjoyed entering the fantasy world of this film for a while.

This movie has one of the most promising beginnings….then a horribly cast Gary Cooper…English and French? Lol. Then the story takes you to places one never would expect. It’s a potential masterpiece that got really distracted right across the scope of the entire mystical board

As I was watching this movie,I realized that my Dearest One ... introduced it to me many years ago. I remember thinking then that it was most romantic and beautiful..but somehow I had forgotten it. 🌹 My Dearest One has passed away now.😞 I miss him dearly. 😭 But the funny thing is..well I was looking through YouTube for a movie,and saw beautiful AH name and just picked it. I don't know..I told my Sister I think my love in Heaven picked it for me. You see,I lost my two brothers through death the other day...a day apart. All I have been doing is crying..they died Oct. 3 ,and Oct. 4th of year 22. It was never expected to be this way. But today I wanted to just lay and watch my phone.(You see I am getting many calls from everyone.❤️‍🩹 But when I saw this lovely film..I cried happy tears,as I think it was my love in Heaven's way of saying hello and it's going to be alright. I know..maybe I am just reaching for something sweet..something good. But I am standing my ground!!! I am not crazy! Sis if you're ever to see this,I know you told me I must be crazy ,to keep me sane...You don't want me to go too far mentally. I love you..I understand. It's just my silly romantic thinking...right? Romantic mysticism! The theme is a dream simultaneously shared by two lovers who achieve a mutual ''out of body experience'' (OBE). If the activity of the physical body slackens sufficiently, we either enter sleep, or find our state of consciousness suddenly shifting from the body to a vantage point that is nearly free of the encumbrances of time, place, space, materiality and the limitations which the 5 senses impose on perception. The most intense form of the OBE is the Near-Death Experience (NDE). In the East, the Pure Land Buddhist monks can initiate at will not only the OBE but even the NDE, and then clearly report in great detail what they see, hear, say and feel while occupying those states. In this enchanting movie, the stress and trauma of incarceration accidentally triggers an OBE for Gary Cooper's character who then lucidly dreams. A lucid dream is a dream which the dreamer controls to such an extent that it intersects the consciousness of the one he loves, but from whom he is separated by force or circumstance. Ann Harding's character becomes aware of this psychic signaling from GC and through following it she is able to find and reunite with GC by co-dreaming lucidly with him. Whether had by just one individual, or at the same time, with another person, the lucid dream can suffer from interference or instability. The movie shows scenes of such precariousness for lucid dream settings. Just a little background on the paranormal premises of this picture....

This movie was along the same theme as The Ghost and Mrs Muir. But not as good. I can now appreciate why Gary Cooper was considered the best in his day.

I have always liked Gary Cooper, he was a fine actor, but this was not one of his finest performances. Ann Harding couldn't give a bad performance if she tried. The beginning of the film started out promising, but it was obvious the writers struggled with the screenplay which was terrible. Henry Hathaway was one of the great directors but I think even he must of struggled with this story as well. It would be interesting to read the novel. Maybe the novel was so ethereal in nature it simply did not translate well to film. I wonder if it translated better in the play. But somehow, I think this film may have been better off left as a novel.

I actually think this story might be a bit harder (but impossible) to perform on stage. With film, you can use certain special effects that are not options for a stage presentation.
I agree with you -- the story is compelling, but the screenwriting could have been better -- but no slight to Henry Hathaway, the director, nor to Gary Cooper or Anne Harding.

What a yummy movie. I still say they should have let the old grumpy husband die by being thrown from that horse so that Gary and Ann could have lived happily ever after. They could have gone on to restore both of their childhood homes where their children would inherit them. Sigh.

A childhood friendship between a little boy and girl, many years later they meet again and their puppy love is rekindled into adult love. Balderdash. She is married, move on, he was unable to love any other since childhood. Balderdash. How unrealistic. Husband tries to shoot Romeo and its plain self defence, yet Romeo ends up in Prison for life. What a load of tripe. Only females can live in romantic la la land.
