Hook was a co-founder of Joy Division along with Bernard Sumner in 1976. Together, they recruited vocalist Ian Curtis and drummer Stephen Morris to complete the quartet. The band reformed as New Order following Curtis’ suicide in May 1980.
Along the way, Hook has had a number of solo efforts, most notably with bands Revenge (1989-1993) and Monaco (1996-2001).
In May 2007, Peter Hook announced that he and Bernard Sumner were no longer working together, which at that point seemed to spell the end for New Order. The remaining trio of Sumner, Morris and Cunningham continued as Bad Lieutenant and Hook continued to work with his new band project, Freebass. This band released It's a Beautiful Life in September 2010 and promptly split.
Since 2007, Hook has kept himself busy with his new band The Light and has toured around the world, playing Joy Division's first album Unknown Pleasures live. Subsequent tours featured other Joy Division and New Order albums. The current line-up is Peter Hook, Jack Bates, Paul Kehoe, David Potts and Martin Rebelski. Peter Hook and Light released a string of live albums featuring Joy Division and New Order material.

And I left you so long on this avenue
And here I stand, in the strangest land
Not knowing what to say or do
As I gaze around at these strangers in town
I guess the only stranger is me
And I wonder (yes, I wonder), yes, I wonder (oh, I wonder)
Is this the way life's meant to be?
Although it's only a day since I was taken away
And left standing here looking in wonder (it's your life, it's your life)
Oh, the ground at my feet, maybe it's just the old street
But everything that I know lies under (it's your life, it's your life)
And when I see what they've done to this place that was home
Shame is all that I feel
Oh, and I wonder (oh, I wonder) yes I wonder (wonder, wonder, wonder, wonder)
Is this the way life's meant to be?
Too late, too late to cry , the people say
Too late for you, too late for me
You've come so far, now you know everything , my friend
(Look and see the wonders of our world)
And I wonder (oh, I wonder), yes, I wonder (yes, I wonder)
Is this the way life's meant to be?
As I wander around this wreck of a town
Where people never speak aloud
With its ivory towers and its plastic flowers
I wish I was back in 1981
Just to see your face, instead of this place
Now I know what you mean to me, ooh
And I wonder (oh, I wonder), yes, I wonder (yes, I wonder)
Is this the way life's meant to be?
And I wonder (oh, I wonder)
Yes, I wonder, wonder, wonder, wonder
Is this the way life's meant to be?
Ooh, I wonder
Oh, I wonder, wonder, wonder
Is this the way life's meant to be?
Oh, is this the way life's meant to be?
Mm, is this the way life's meant to be?
I wanna know now, is this the way life's meant to be?
The lyrics of "Way of Life" by Peter Hook and the Light delve into themes of displacement, longing, nostalgia, and questioning the nature of existence. The singer of the song reflects on their journey to a new place, feeling like a stranger among unfamiliar faces. This sense of disorientation is compounded by the realization that the once-familiar surroundings have been transformed, evoking a feeling of loss and disconnect. The lyrics convey a deep introspection about the uncertainties and changes that life can bring, with the singer pondering whether this unsettling reality is truly what life is supposed to be.
The song captures the emotional weight of being uprooted from familiarity and thrust into the unknown. The singer grapples with the passage of time, lamenting the swift changes that have taken place and the feeling of being out of sync with the world around them. The imagery of a once-beloved place now altered beyond recognition is poignant, as it reflects the universal experience of witnessing the evolution and decay of memories and places. The lyrics convey a profound sense of loss and bewilderment, as the singer struggles to come to terms with the upheaval that has occurred in their absence.
The chorus serves as a recurring refrain of introspection and contemplation, with the singer posing the rhetorical question of whether this chaotic and unfamiliar existence is the true essence of life. The repetition of the phrase "Is this the way life's meant to be?" underscores the theme of existential questioning and seeking meaning in the face of upheaval and uncertainty. The singer's musings on the nature of existence and one's place in the world are interwoven with a wistful longing for a simpler time, perhaps symbolized by the reference to 1981 and the desire to see a familiar face amidst the desolation of the present.
The song's final verses evoke a sense of resignation and acceptance, as the singer navigates the ruins of a town that has lost its soul and its voice. The juxtaposition of "ivory towers and plastic flowers" paints a vivid picture of a world devoid of authenticity and depth, further emphasizing the singer's yearning for a past that held deeper meaning and connection. The closing repetitions of "wonder, wonder, wonder" underscore the ongoing search for understanding and meaning in a world that seems increasingly fragmented and disenchanted. The song's haunting melody and introspective lyrics invite listeners to reflect on their own experiences of displacement, change, and the eternal quest for purpose in the face of life's uncertainties.
