The Reason
Peter Principles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I′m not a perfect person
There's many things I wish I didn′t do
But I continue learning
I never meant to do those things to you
And so I have to say before I go
That I just want you to know

I found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
And the reason is you

I'm sorry that I hurt you
It's something I must live with everyday
And all the pain I put you through
I wish that I could take it all away
And be the one who catches all your tears
That′s why I need you to hear

I found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
And the reason is you

And the reason is you
And the reason is you
And the reason is you

I′m not a perfect person
I never meant to do those things to you
And so I have to say before I go
That I just want you to know

I found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
And the reason is you

I found a reason to show
A side of me you didn't know

A reason for all that I do
And the reason is you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Peter Principles's song The Reason revolve around the theme of regret, apology and redemption. It conveys the message that the singer is not perfect and has made mistakes in the past that have hurt someone he cares about. However, he has since recognized the error of his ways and wants to make amends. He found a reason to change who he used to be, a reason to start over – and that reason is the person he hurt.

The song is an expression of the singer’s remorse, frustration, and hope for forgiveness. He is sorry for causing pain, and he wishes he could undo his actions. However, he is also determined to be better in the future. The line "And the reason is you" suggests that the person he hurt is the inspiration behind his desire for change. By recognizing the impact of his actions, he has been able to find the motivation to grow and become a better person.

In summary, The Reason is a heartfelt ballad that conveys a powerful message of remorse and redemption. It encourages listeners to take responsibility for their mistakes and strive to be better, using their past experiences as a source of inspiration.

Thank goodness you haven't reached your level of incompetence, because the work you do is insightful gold.

I agree with the "Peter Principal", however, let me also point out, that Incompetent People at ALL levels, ACTIVELY seek to Keep Competent People Down, for fear of their own positions.
If you couple that with Higher Management who is out of touch with the people around/beneath them, the "machine" will get gummed up pretty quick.
Then most people are afraid to do what's necessary to fix the problem. (i.e., firing people/restructuring)
Happens ALL the time, EVERYWHERE. :>/

Great video! Rising to the level of incompetence is something we at my place of work are very cautious about. In order to prevent it, we have a system where in order to get promoted, you must demonstrate that you are capable of the next level while remaining (and getting paid) at your current level. The system brings out other problems, but it do notice almost no incompetence at work (in a huge company).

It would be great to hear a more in-depth discussion of "creative incompetence," as I feel it was presented and never elaborated. Company-wide systems are important but I would like to know what I can do to maintain my ambition without setting myself up for failure.

@Raksasaification

Sounds like exploitation to me.

So I have a method that I employ and I find it works extremely well. Anytime that I undertake a new task I evaluate my current skill sets. If I find that my current skill sets are insufficient, I take the time to assess, plan, then implement the needed changes in order to overcompensate. This seems somewhat counterintuitive but I will explain why it is not in a couple more sentences. First of all, the current project that I am working on will be one that I am MORE than adequate to perform- thus I am using Creative Incompetence in the tense of reverse psychology. I can then perform the task at hand while planning in echelon the undertaking of developing the new skill sets so that when the "promotion" comes I am once again, prepared in overabundance. The reason for the overcompensation is due to the fact that I will not know all of the drawbacks and potentially demotivational conflicts that will come with the new project. In this way, I have created a buffer between my point of ultimate incompetence and my current level of competence by assuming a level of incompetence in the first place. I have thus compensated for a degree of incompetence from the onset so that when I do take on the new task I can use the buffer I have created to evolve potential deficiencies into strengths and thus I have raised the ceiling on my level of ultimate incompetence.

Great way of explaining this concept. I just learned of this book in a Nardwuar the human serviette interview with Pharrell Williams. Supposedly, Nardwuar's mother co-wrote the Peter Principle with Laurence J. Peter.
