Hateful
Peter Searcy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
In your heart gasoline and you burn just like a machine
Cause you're hateful and it's coming back on you
In your eyes you can't see that the world around you is falling
The world around you is falling
These lyrics from Peter Searcy's song 'Hateful' speak to the internal turmoil and conflict that comes with a negative and judgmental mindset. The opening lines suggest that the person in question is living in their own head, disconnected from reality and unable to see things from a balanced perspective. Their heart is "gasoline," implying that their passion and inner drive are fueled by negativity and anger, ultimately leading to burnout.
The chorus serves as a warning, suggesting that their hateful attitude and behavior will inevitably come back to haunt them. They are reaping what they sow, and the negativity they put out into the world will eventually return to them.
The final two lines underscore the gravity of the situation, as the world around them is literally falling apart. The past they tried to cling to and the illusions they created for themselves are crumbling, leaving them with nothing to hold onto. The repetition of the word "falling" at the end emphasizes the sense of chaos and destruction that is coming to a head.
Overall, these lyrics speak to the consequences of harboring negative and hateful feelings towards oneself and others. The isolation and disconnection from reality that comes with these attitudes leads to self-destruction and harms those around us.
