Five Hundred Miles
Peter Gordon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Tear drops fell on mama's note
When I read the things she wrote
She said, we miss you girl
We love you come on home
Well I didn't have to pack
I had it all right on my back
Now I'm five hundred miles away from home
Away from home, away from home
Cold and tired and all alone
Yes, I'm five hundred miles away from home

It's hard to tell the state I'm in
Where I'm going, where I've been
But there's a dream I've been following so long
If mama knew the things I've done
She'd forgive them everyone
But I'm still five hundred miles away from home

Away from home, away from home
Cold and tired and all alone
Yes, I'm five hundred miles away from home

Can't remember when I ate
it's just thumb and walk and wait
And I'm still five hundred miles away from home
If my luck had been just right
I'd be with them all tonight
But I'm still five hundred miles away from home

Away from home, away from home
Cold and tired and all alone
Yes, I'm five hundred miles away from home

Lord, I'm still five hundred miles away from home

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Peter Gordon's song Five Hundred Miles tell the story of a journey away from home. The song begins with tears falling as the singer reads a note written by their mother saying how much they miss and love them and asking them to come back home. However, the singer has everything they need on their back and didn't need to pack. They are now five hundred miles away from home, feeling cold, tired, and alone.

Despite not knowing exactly where they are going or where they have been, the singer has been following a dream for a long time. They understand that if their mother knew some of the things they have done, she would forgive them, but they are still five hundred miles away from home. The lyrics mention that the singer can't even remember when they last ate and that their journey has been one of walking and waiting. They express that if their luck had been different, they would be with their loved ones tonight, but they are still five hundred miles away from home.

I always enjoy watching these old videos of Austin Powers and Gordon

@sylviakruger5000

Love this classic video! I sang 500 Miles as a duet when I was in my first year of high-school.

@kevingoins9858

Two guitars, two voices, one mic. That's all it's needed.

@derekwiegand9311

Intetesting how the drums faintly appear close to the end of the song, then a big horn fanfair right at the end 😄

@jmysflix

...and a lot of screaming.

@DavidHBurkart

Peter and Gordon gold here... Britain's fine answer to the Everly Brothers. We are all better because of two such remarkable duos.

This is one of the many reasons why I love 12 string acoustic guitars. Just hear those lovely chimey octaves the 12 string has to offer.

I still have two Matins,one ECCO ( from 1966.),one Musima from 1984. and Yamaha from late 1960s all tvelwe strings...I found Yamaha to be the best regarding that very chimey sound...middle gauge strings and always tuned in C or C sharp... Wonderful stuff!!!

@el_chief_dannyboy

@@radomirratkovic9014 I like using my Luna Gypsy 12 string because it’s great craftsmanship for a great price!
