Separate Lives
Phil Collins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You called me from the room in your hotel
All full of romance for someone that you met
And telling me how sorry you were, leaving so soon
And that you miss me sometimes when you're alone in your room
Do I feel lonely too?

You have no right to ask me how I feel
You have no right to speak to me so kind
I can't go on just holding on to ties
Now that we're living separate lives

Well, I held on to let you go
And if you lost your love for me, well you never let it show
There was no way to compromise
So now we're living (living)
Separate lives

Ooh, it's so typical, love leads to isolation
So you build that wall (build that wall)
Yes, you build that wall (build that wall)
And you make it stronger

Well, you have no right to ask me how I feel
You have no right to speak to me so kind
Some day I might (I might) find myself looking in your eyes
But for now, we'll go on living separate lives

Yes for now, we'll go on living separate lives
Separate lives

Overall Meaning

The song "Separate Lives" by Phil Collins is part of the soundtrack of the 1985 romantic drama film "White Nights." The lyrics convey the feelings of two lovers who have grown apart, as one of them calls from a hotel room, confessing their feelings for someone else, while the other person struggles to let go of the past and move on. The chorus is a poignant reminder of their new, separate lives and the impossibility of going back to what once was.

The first stanza offers a sense of mixed emotions, as the person on the other line recounts their romantic encounter with someone else, but also admits to missing the person they're talking to. The question, "Do I feel lonely too?", suggests that the singer may be torn between feelings of hurt and lingering love for their partner. However, the second stanza reveals the bitterness and anger underlying their conversation, as the singer accuses the other person of having no right to ask how they feel or to be kind to them, given their betrayal.

The shift in tone is reflected in the music, as the chorus is more upbeat and explosive, highlighting the impossibility of compromise and the emotional distance between them. The bridge, with its repeated refrain, "Yes, you build that wall / And you make it stronger," is particularly poignant, as it speaks to the common defense mechanism of people who feel hurt or threatened in relationships, but also suggests a certain sense of resignation, as if they both recognize that their separation is inevitable.

Overall, "Separate Lives" is a powerful ballad that explores the complexities of love, loss, and moving on. It speaks to the universal experience of relationships that don't work out, and the pain of trying to let go of someone you still love.
