Hang in Long Enough
Phil Collins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The signs are getting clearer, clearer than you need
The writing's on the wall, for you to see

You never thought you'd ever get the taste
You never thought that it could be this good
Just tell me what you want and I'll find the key
Reach out and touch it's all yours.
If you hang in long enough, you'll do it
Just hang in long enough

You're down on the ground, or so you say
You'd sell the hole in your pocket, if you could find a way
Don't ask me how I know, you don't want to hear
It's been a long hard road, and the end is getting near.

You never thought you'd ever get the chance
You never thought your break would come along
If you tell me what you want, I'll find the key
Just reach out and touch it's all yours

If you hang in

They always say
The best things in life are free
But you want to have everything
Well you're going to have to beg if you want it all.

So hang in long enough, you'll do it
Hang in long enough

They'll let you out, then pull you in
Playing hell with your emotions,
You'll feel like giving in.

So just hang in long enough

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Phil Collin's song Hang in Long Enough portrays a message of perseverance and not giving up no matter how hard the situation. The signs are getting clearer, and the writing is on the wall, which implies that the situation is dire and there's no hiding from it. You never thought you'd ever get the taste, and you never believed that it could be this good. The singer is advising listeners to speak up and ask for what they want, and he'll find the key for them to reach out and touch it.

The lyrics further state that when you're down on the ground, you're willing to do anything to get up. You'd sell the hole in your pocket if it could get you back on track. Unfortunately, it has been a long hard road, and the end is getting closer. This implies that the road to success isn't easy and requires patience and resilience. The singer also acknowledges that the best things in life are free, but to achieve everything, one must work hard and be willing to beg for it. The lyrics encourage people to hang in there long enough to achieve their goals.

In conclusion, the song Hang in Long Enough motivates listeners to keep pushing and never give up despite the circumstances. The singer acknowledges that the journey might be challenging, but if you hold on long enough, the rewards will be worth it.

I don't mean to be a "Debbie Downer" but I can honestly say television wasn't a household thing in 1912.
True Story
My dad was born in 1920 (March 24th).
He told me, (before he passed away in 2000), the first time he saw a television was at the New York World's Fair in 1938.
He thought it was the greatest thing since sliced cheese!
🧀 <-- a slice of cheese
He often spoke of Nickleodeons.
It was the only entertainment close to television back then.
It was silent "film" on flip cards that used a tiny hand crank.
He said It only costed 1 nickle.
Hence the name.
Great, now I feel old. 😞
And I'm only 47, I crap you not! 🧐
Thank you for reading. 📚

Doobie1975

great song, one of Phil's underplayed hits that didn't seem to catch on unlike many of his other hits, I personally liked Phil's uptempo stuff more than his ballads.

Dale Chawkins

Inside Out is my favorite, which isn't exactly uptempo or a ballad...
