Just Another Story
Phil Collins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Father comes home 'cause his money's run out -
Seems a little loose tonight, he starts to shout.

Dinner's not on the table, seems mother's not able,
She's staring at the TV.

You can smell it on his breath, feel it in his touch,
He never meant to hit her hard, but he's like that when he's had too much.

It's just another story 'bout going too far,
It's just another story 'bout going too far.

Well the kid's at school, she's getting good grades,
But the peer pressure's starting now - too bad, she had it made.

Seems there's always someone trying to push you to do something,
You know, ain't the way they told you to
It's hard to see
The things you taught her, how to be,
It's like you told her nothing, selective memory.

Come on try it, it's just a smoke, ain't gonna kill you, so she takes a toke -
Fade to grey.

It's just another story 'bout going too far,
It's just another story 'bout going too far.

Well the guys at work seemed okay,
They'd buy you a drink, get you laid, what's wrong with that?

Why'd they have more money than you, expensive cars, expensive clothes,
D'you ever think of what they do?

At night they're out, shakin' people down,
When they're walking together seems they own the town.

But hey, who's gonna talk, you are their alibi,
Don't turn around, don't ask questions, just walk

It's just another story 'bout going too far,
It's just another story 'bout going too far.

Overall Meaning

The song "Just Another Story" by Phil Collins depicts various stories that all revolve around people who have gone too far. The first verse portrays a situation where a father comes home with no money, and his frustration turns into aggression. The mother is unable to serve dinner while glued to the TV, and the situation becomes worse due to the father's drunk and violent behavior. The chorus highlights that it's just another story about going too far.

The second verse is about a school-going girl who is doing well academically, but her peers are pressuring her to try drugs. The girl eventually succumbs to the temptation, and the melody fades into a depiction of the girl's experience. The third and final verse describes a man who is envious of his colleague's riches and ways of living. He eventually chooses to accept the colleague's invitation, participating in illegal activities.

The three verses present different situations, but they all end up with an individual going too far- the father's anger leading to abuse, the girl's peer pressure leading to drug use, and the man's envy leading to illegal actions. The message of the song is that people always have to be aware of their actions because even the slightest mistake could lead to severe consequences.

Also a good story for young people to take heed. A lot of Philโ€™s lyrics have so much warning if we take the โ€œWake Up Callโ€.. Very introspective writer. Sharp contrast to the โ€œnothingโ€ lyrics that also come out of the music industry. Music and lyrics need to speak to a higher purpose and Phil def brings that out.

Phil Collins for me is one of most important musicians in the history of Music. I hear Genesis, Phill Collins, about 50 years old.
