Stars
Philip Quast Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There, out in the darkness
A fugitive running
Fallen from God
Fallen from grace
God be my witness
I never shall yield
Till we come face to face
Till we come face to face

He knows his way in the dark
Mine is the way of the Lord
Those who follow the path of the righteous
Shall have their reward
And if they fall
As Lucifer fell
The flames
The sword!

Stars
In your multitudes
Scarce to be counted
Filling the darkness
With order and light
You are the sentinels
Silent and sure
Keeping mxmlyricstag watch in the night
Keeping watch in the night

You know your place in the sky
You hold your course and your aim
And each in your season
Returns and returns
And is always the same
And if you fall as Lucifer fell
You fall in flames!

And so it must be
For so it is written
On the doorway to paradise
That those who falter and those who fall
Must pay the price!

Lord let me find him
That I may see him
Safe behind bars
I will never rest

Till then, this I swear
This I swear by the stars!

Overall Meaning

The first stanza of Philip Quast's "Stars" talks about a fugitive who has fallen from God's grace and is now on the run. The singer swears that he will never back down until he confronts his opponent. In the second stanza, the singer acknowledges his own path in the darkness, which he believes is that of the Lord. He also states that those who follow this path of righteousness will be rewarded. However, if they falter and fall, as Lucifer did, they will be met with flames and the sword. The chorus of the song then shifts the attention to the stars themselves, which the singer sees as sentinels watching in the night. They fill the darkness and bring order and light to the world. The stars are constant in their paths and always return, but the same cannot be said for those who falter and fall, who must pay a price according to the way to paradise.

The final stanza reprises the singer's desire to apprehend the fugitive he has been pursuing. He swears by the stars that he will not rest until redemption is achieved by bringing the fugitive to justice.

You know how good a villain song is when you watch it out of context, you would think he was the hero

@zelosjr

Heroes in modern pieces very rarely speak of righteousness.

@knightscypher8604

It isn't really a villain song. Antagonist song, you betcha. But Javert isn't a villain, just a man flawed by his own beliefs that if someone commits a crime they can never be good.

@N.I.R.A.T.I.A.S.

Javert's just a policeman who's somewhat zealous and overcommitted to the philosophies underpinning his job. He's not a "bad guy". If anyone's the "bad guy" in Les Mis, it's Valjean. He's a convicted thief - sure, he "only" stole some bread, but stealing is stealing - then he tried to steal from the bishop, then he went on the lam rather than facing his punishment, concocted a false identity and lived a sham life, and then when the law finally caught up with him he went on the lam again except this time he dragged his innocent adopted daughter into it.

@@N.I.R.A.T.I.A.S. Plus, in the book, he was an actual criminal, and kind of an asshole. To the point where the reason Les Misérables is so powerful it's exactly because "if this awful excuse for a human being can be redeemed, can't almost anyone"?

@davidholmgren8156

Obviously the Thenardiers and the French government as a whole are the villains of Les Miserables

Perfect execution. No other Javert I’ve heard comes close. The enunciation. The pitch. The tone. The pacing. The way he tells a story and doesn’t just sing the words. Perfect.

Even the other actors and members of the orchestra are clapping!!!

Roger Allam will always be my favourite

@@Simon-sf7ng Russell Crowe was not bad, but his voice never came close to the power of Philip Quast. The tenth anniversary cast is the superior to the one in 2012 in every way.
