It Will End In Tears
Philip Selway Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Welcome back hang out the flags I'm not bitter
Well hey for you
You stole the show
Back from the cold
Did you miss me?
Bet you stayed in all the time

Remember me?
I used to be something didn't I?
But it's not my time now
I'll be leaving
Stay inside
I hate goodbyes
Don't be bitter now
We could spend a lifetime in a weatherhouse

Where have you been?
What made you leave?
I'm still waiting impatiently
You and I side by side
Always missing
One for rain and one for shine

Remember me?
I used to be something didn't I?
But it's not my time now
I'll be leaving
Stay inside
I hate goodbyes
Don't be bitter now
We could spend a lifetime in a weatherhouse

Don't, it will end in tears and I won't be sorry
Don't, it will end in tears and I won't be sorry
Don't, it will end in tears and I won't be sorry now
Don't, it will end in tears and I won't be sorry
Don't, it will end in tears and I won't be sorry

Don't, it will end in tears and I won't be sorry now
We just crossed a line, we just crossed a line.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Philip Selway's "It Will End In Tears" are full of conflicting emotions and a sense of longing for something lost. Selway seems to be addressing somebody who has returned after being away for a while and is welcoming them back, but also acknowledging that things have changed. He seems to feel a sense of bitterness, which he tries to overcome by telling the other person not to be bitter. He describes himself as somebody who used to be important, but who now realizes that it's not his time anymore and he will be leaving soon. There's a feeling of sadness and regret in the lyrics, as Selway seems to be longing for a past that can never be recovered.

The chorus of the song is particularly poignant, as Selway warns the other person not to continue down a path that will end in tears. He acknowledges that there's a line that they've crossed, but it's not clear what that line might be. Perhaps it's a reference to a romantic relationship that has gone sour, or maybe it's a metaphor for something else entirely. What is clear is that Selway is trying to warn the other person about the consequences of their actions, even as he acknowledges that he won't be sorry when those consequences come to pass.

Overall, "It Will End In Tears" is a powerful and emotional song that explores themes of loss, regret, and the passage of time. The lyrics are ambiguous enough to allow for multiple interpretations, but they all share a sense of sadness and longing that is deeply affecting.

I'm thinking of Dark Side of the Moon and later, when their studio tricks were used to convey broader and more diverse themes than psychedelia.

For me, the drum fills hearken to a different less poppy style of rock, and the strings are arranged more loosely than any pop song.

Pop pop form is verse, prechorus, chorus, verse, prechorus, chorus, bridge, chorus

this is verse, B section, verse, B section, chorus

I am being extremely anal and subjective, but my opinion remains firm.

I loved his first album, but man he has really grown as a songwriter. These new songs are really powerful.

Craig Brown

Agreed - I love the use of the "Weather house" allegory all the way through the song ("Back from the cold, did you miss me?, bet you stayed in all the time", "but it's not my time now, I'll be leaving, stay inside", "you and I, side by side, always missing, one for rain and one for shine") - even the video alludes to it.

It's a bit of a an emotive heart pull to finish, but I was always a sucker for strings and strong backing vocals...

K-leb

Totally different to, say, Thom's solo stuff. Radiohead has a great selection of band members.

ToneGarvey

Try to listen to it without thinking of Thom or Radiohead.

Creative Drive

On repeat right now. Beautiful track.
