Steamroller
Phoebe Bridgers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I am tired of being sad
I feel it when I wake up
And it just stays bad
It hits me like a sickness
Or a steamroller
Makes me wanna lay down
And get run over
But then I see you
Always smiling
Makes me wanna touch you
Keep from dying

You're a brother to me
You're my partner in crime
You're the feeling I get
When I'm feeling fine
Part of me wants you
But most of me needs you
So I won't fall unless you ask me to

We talk for hours
Until finally
Sleep takes over
The amphetamine
In the darkness
I feel your fingers
They don't touch me
But there's a danger

You're a brother to me
You're my partner in crime
Your the feeling I get
When I'm feeling fine
Part of me wants you
But most of me needs you
So I won't fall unless you ask me

You're a brother to me
You're my partner in crime
You're the feeling I get
When I'm feeling fine
Part of me wants you

But most of me needs you
So I won't fall unless you ask me

Overall Meaning

In "Steamroller," Phoebe Bridgers describes her depression as a constant weight that she feels upon waking up, a sickness that hits her like a steamroller, and makes her want to give up altogether. But when she sees her friend, the addressee of the song, she feels moved and inspired by his joyful disposition. His very presence animates her to try and transcend the sadness, to touch him and feel close to him, and to remember that life can be good even when you feel low.

Bridgers compares her friend to a brother, a partner in crime, and the feeling she gets when she's feeling fine, all of which are positive associations that characterize the intensity of their bond. She admires him for his resolve, his ability to stay afloat, and his capacity to lift her up as well. Yet, she also acknowledges the danger that comes with their relationship, which she characterizes as a dark, amphetamine-fueled intimacy in which their fingers occasionally touch but do not embrace. The song ends on a note of hesitation. Bridgers states that most of her needs the friend, but not all, implying that there is some kind of unresolved tension between them that could destroy the delicate balance they've achieved if it were ever to be acknowledged.
