Kyoto
Phoebe Bridgers & Glitch Gum Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Day off in Kyoto
I got bored at the temple
Looked around at the 7-Eleven
The band took the speed train
Went to the arcade
I wanted to go but I didn't
You called me from a payphone
They still got pay phones
It cost a dollar a minute
To tell me you're getting sober
And you wrote me a letter
But I don't have to read it

I'm gonna kill you
If you don't beat me to it
Dreaming through Tokyo skies
I wanted to see the world
Then I flew over the ocean
And I changed my mind (woo)

Sunset's been a freak show
On the weekend
So I've been driving out to the suburbs
To park at the Goodwill
Stare at the chemtrails
With my little brother
He said you called on his birthday
You were off by like ten days
But you get a few points for trying
Remember getting the truck fixed
When you let us drive it
Twenty-five felt like flying

I don't forgive you
But please don't hold me to it
Born under Scorpio skies
I wanted to see the world
Through your eyes until it happened
Then I changed my mind

Guess I lied
I'm a liar

Who lies
'Cause I'm a liar

Overall Meaning

In Phoebe Bridgers's song Kyoto, she speaks of a day off in Kyoto, which she found uninteresting. She then goes on to describe how the band went to an arcade, however, she decided not to go with them. Meanwhile, she receives a phone call from someone trying to get sober and who also wrote her a letter, but she refuses to read it. Phoebe then talks about her trip to Tokyo, where she wanted to see the world but changed her mind after flying over the ocean. She then talks about how the sunset has become a freak show and how she has been driving to the suburbs to park at Goodwill, where she stares at chemtrails with her little brother. She mentions that the person who tried to get sober called her brother's birthday but was ten days off, but she still gives him credit for trying.

Phoebe then talks about how she has not forgiven the person for past actions but does not want to be held to it. She mentions that she was born under Scorpio skies and wanted to see the world through the person's eyes until it happened, but she changed her mind. She ends the song by admitting she is a liar and reiterates it with the final line, 'cause I'm a liar.'

Interpretation of the lyrics can be subjective, but to some extent, the song seems to talk about Phoebe's inner struggles with herself, insecurities, and disappointments concerning people she has cared for. Perhaps she had expectations that were not met or did not want to confront certain issues and kept them hidden. Despite her acknowledgment of being a liar, it is also evident that she values honesty in others, as seen from her comments that she does not have to read the letter and that she hasn't forgiven the person but still gives them credit for trying. The song also portrays her longing to connect with others, but her disappointments have led her to change her mind.
