Letterbox
Pickwick Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So you lean in real close
And you sing a strange note
I've been feeling for a while now
Like you mind is gonna go
I walk into your place
Full of pictures of faces
Your paintings on the wall watch
As you're walking out the door

Trumpets sound as your crowned
on the steps of your apartment
Walking once again down your
In and out ocean
And I just sit in the sound booth
Waiting for the summer to end

As you paint another eye
To watch the falling sky
I've been feeling for a while now
like you'll always be this high
You hear a wondrous sound
As it starts to fall down

The starry sky is falling to the sea
I tell a joke to it

Overall Meaning

In "Letterbox", Pickwick describes a person who is experiencing a mental breakdown or possibly a psychedelic trip. The lyrics describe the singer observing the person singing a strange note and feeling like their mind is going to go. The person's apartment is full of pictures and paintings, symbolizing their active imagination and creativity. The singer sits in the sound booth, waiting for the summer to end, possibly symbolic of waiting for this strange time to pass. As the person paints another eye to watch the falling sky, the singer worries that they will always be in this state of mind.

The lyrics also contain imagery of trumpets sounding and the person being crowned on the steps of their apartment, which could be interpreted as the person feeling powerful and in control of their mental state. However, the mention of an "In and out ocean" suggests that their mental state is also constantly fluctuating. The mention of a starry sky falling to the sea could represent the person's perception of their reality being shattered. The joke the singer tells to the falling sky could be an attempt to lighten the mood or distract from the intensity of the situation.
