Emmanuelle
Pierre Bachelet/Roy Herve Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mélodie d'amour chantait le cœur d'Emmanuelle
Qui bat cœur à corps perdu
Mélodie d'amour chantait le corps d'Emmanuelle
Qui vit corps à cœur déçu

Tu es encore
Presque une enfant
Tu n'as connu
Qu'un seul amant
Mais à vingt ans
Pour rester sage
L'amour étant
Trop long voyage

Mélodie d'amour chantait le cœur d'Emmanuelle
Qui bat cœur à corps perdu
Mélodie d'amour chantait le corps d'Emmanuelle
Qui vit corps à cœur déçu

L'amour à cœur
Tu l'as rêvé
L'amour à corps
Tu l'as trouvé
Tu es en somme
Devant les hommes
Comme un soupir
Sur leur désir

Tu es si belle
Emmanuelle
Cherche le cœur
Trouve les pleurs
Cherche toujours
Cherche plus loin
Viendra l'amour
Sur ton chemin

Mélodie d'amour chantait le cœur d'Emmanuelle
Qui bat cœur à corps perdu

Mélodie d'amour chantait le corps d'Emmanuelle
Qui vit corps à cœur déçu.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "Emmanuelle" by Pierre Bachelet and Roy Herve evoke a sense of love and longing experienced by the character of Emmanuelle. The opening lines convey a poignant message of love as a melody that sings in Emmanuelle's heart, a heart that beats intensely and passionately. The reference to "corps perdu" (lost body) suggests a deep emotional connection that Emmanuelle feels, perhaps with someone or something that fills her with passion and desire.

As the lyrics progress, we learn about Emmanuelle's experiences with love and relationships. She is portrayed as a young woman who, despite her age and limited romantic experiences, has only known the love of one man. The mention of turning twenty and the decision to 'stay wise' in love hints at the complexities of navigating relationships and the fear of getting hurt. The idea of love being a "long journey" adds a layer of depth to Emmanuelle's emotional landscape, suggesting that love requires patience and perseverance.

The repetition of the motif of "mélodie d'amour" throughout the song underscores the central theme of love as a driving force in Emmanuelle's life. The juxtaposition of heart and body in the lyrics speaks to the different aspects of love that Emmanuelle experiences - the emotional connection that stirs her heart and the physical intimacy that leaves her feeling unfulfilled or disappointed. This contrast between heart and body reflects the complexities of human relationships and the inner conflicts that often arise when navigating matters of the heart.

The closing lines of the song offer a message of hope and resilience for Emmanuelle. Despite the challenges and disappointments she may face in love, the lyrics encourage her to continue seeking love and fulfillment. The imagery of Emmanuelle as a beautiful soul searching for love amidst tears and desires conveys a sense of vulnerability and strength. Ultimately, the song captures the bittersweet essence of Emmanuelle's journey through love, highlighting the universal themes of longing, discovery, and resilience in the face of heartbreak.

When I heard Lily Allen's song for the first time I instantly recognised the tune from that 1970's film, the theme composed by Bachelet.
I think lily did a great job, I hope bachelet got some money too.
