Currently the band consists of Alex Lee the guitarist/ vocals, Jason Lee on bass, Nathan on drums. The band took influence from Nirvana, Sex Pistols, Ramones, Distillers and Alice In Chains for the Audio-rape EP, however, with more recent anarchistic songs, influence has been taken from anarcho-punk bands such as The Exploited, D.O.A. and Dead Kennedys. Pin-Up Godiva have played a number of small local live performances and have recently released their new EP Bored of Beginning showcasing much stronger, better quality recordings. Past key band members have included: Kait x Angst (Dunne), Jordan Goodier, Kushti Westwood, Rae Lewis-Aeling and Calum Evans.

I've been diagnosed with clinical depression and have struggled and fought tooth and nail through it with the help of a ragtag support system. I can say with full certainty that a cramped metal box entrapping me from all angles for 6 months is not a simulation of depression. It's a sadistic prop with no scientific purpose.

No light, no sound, no distractions or ability to leave even if you wanted to for months and months or years on end. There is no autonomy, no way out, no way to seek help. The "experiment" was still nothing like real life unless the subject suffered from extreme abuse and neglect as a child. There were no outside influences allowed in the pit of despair. No attempts to offer contact, medications or comfort. You said it yourself, "being denied positive human interaction is exactly what causes depression": in the real world, usually something or someone would at least be a possibility to offer help. Not even a hint of sunshine, the smell of rain or a soft blanket was allowed. If you were not offered even the slightest bit of comfort, you were a victim of abuse and suffer from TRAUMA: not some sort of congenital/ hormonal depression. The experiment does nothing more than force a depressive state onto innocent animals. There is no excuse for this "experiment". There is no reason for it. Those of us who have suffered from depression know exactly what it feels like: we don't need a torture chamber for healthy, innocent monkeys to explain how torturous depression is. The whole thing is absolutely disgusting and this guy suffered from something far more than than depression or grief: his sick need to inflict pain to prove how bad he suffered from "depression" is more akin to some sort of personality disorder, most likely extreme narcissism or psychopathy. It's obvious that torture will induce trauma. All this sick "experiment" proved was that some people are so devoid of empathy that they are willing to take out their pain on others and have no reservations about it. And furthermore that society not only allows them to do so but encourages it and masks it under the term of "science". In the end, all this did was prove what a disgusting excuse for a human this guy was and how academia allowed him to get away with it.....

Thirdly, you have no valid point: there is absolutely no reason to torture animals to show how painful and disabling depression and trauma are. Furthermore, your example only proves my point: this experiment was completely unnecessary because if you subject a living being to extreme abuse and neglect, OF COURSE they are going to suffer from crippling depression, trauma and attachment issues. Just like if you go to a third world country where there is no food, OF COURSE you are going to see starving people. The despair chamber offers no solutions or even attempts to help the monkeys afterwards: it's just torture for torture's sake. My opinion is just my opinion but as someone who suffers from depression AND is a mental health professional, I'd say I have plenty of weight to back up my thoughts. But in the end, I don't need experience in either realm because this is a no brainer: the experiment is unethical, cruel and serves no purpose other than to torture helpless animals. End of story.

it is so much easier to assume that sociopaths are incapable of love. it allows people to comfortably imagine that sociopaths are on the fringes of society when in reality, sociopaths can be our neighbours, friends, family, or lovers. the scary truth is that someone who is capable of killing and torture can come home to his loving family where he is also a loving husband and father. a person can be both. and that thought is so much scarier than the evil caricature that most people imagine when they think of sociopaths.

I believe sociopaths often have exactly one person they bond with, and become borderline obsessed with, to a point where you could even call it a twisted form of love (as opposed to true psychopaths who are literally incapable of feeling love at all). Sociopaths are also made, not born, which lines up well with Harlow's upbringing. All this just confirms to me that he is an actual sociopath, and an especially twisted one at that.

I think it's interesting how these studies are viewed as important for research and revealing into how humans develop emotionally. And yet, people also consider animals to be emotionless. So, I have a BS in psychology and I want to be an art therapist. Harlow's research was important, but I also think he uses it to exorcize his own personal demons. The wire mother experiments would've been enough, and even they would likely not be approved by an ethics board today. He was a sad, damaged man who used his research as an excuse to put his pain on others, and it just seems particularly tragic that he, in a way, did to these monkeys what was done to him.

I'm relating hard to these test subjects and that's pretty disturbing. Dude definitely simulated his own trauma on these animals to not have to deal with them himself. His position as a scientist allowed him to completely dissociate from his emotions and become the depression that plagued him. It's obvious he felt like it controlled his life and thus by becoming it and subjecting other creatures to it, it gave him a sense of control back in his life. The cycle of abuse is very apparent

The orphaned baby monkeys act more like severely neglected, emotionally disturbed human children than any healthy monkey I've ever seen come close to acting human. They're similar, yeah, but even the one that got released with it's peers was acting identical to a stressed abuse victim while the others behaved like... Well, like curious, normal monkeys.

Thank you for this video. Seeing it I remembered that I actually learned about these experiment in school way back in the 70s. I especially remember the wire-mom and the padded mom. We have learned a lot about children and psychology since then. To think that there was a time whem people thought children only cared about and needed food. Just food and nothing else! I remember as a child some people weren't convinced this wasn't true - even when they also had Hitler's "experiments" to draw from. Hitler wanted to breed a lot of arian people so he had a lot of human babies "made" thinking all they needed was food and they would grow up to be productive, blond, blue eyed citizens of his Third Reich. It didn't work. Today we think well doh! because it's so obviously wrong to us. But how do we actually KNOW and not just assume this? Well, these kinds of experiments - however cruel - provided us with that knowledge. It's impossible to defend cruelty but a lot of psychological experiments actually were. Sometimes the researchers didn't know untill the results came in and they could see the damage caused. I'm thinking about the experiment were they wanted to find out how far people would go to obey orders from authorities. Test persons were then told to give "prisoners" electrical shocks when they anwsered various questions incorrectly. The prisoners were actors so no one was physically harmed. The real shock was learning that most people would actually go very VERY far torturing others, simply because an authority figure told them to. They would protest and feel horrible but they continued in order to avoid being disobedient. Humans are really strange and scary creatures.

I think Harry was extremely damaged by his own childhood. The reason for his experiments is probably to figure out his own mental problems he faced during his life, since everything he tested the monkeys for, is something he went through.
I my opinion he was damaged beyond repair. I highly doubt he loved his wife even. I think he saw her as a handy convenience in his life and he missed the things she did for him. I think he comes close be being a psychopath.
If you can do things like that to animals, there is no love or compassion in your heart and soul. Not loving animals (as in not liking them as pets or interested in their being) is something totally different than being able to torture them so badly.
Everyone has someone or something they hate. But almost no one actually tortures that person so badly. That is for people with severe mental problems.

My conclusion is that this man was so busy with looking outside to science, that he missed completely what was going on inside himself. He was a very disturbed individual, to say the least. I feel deeply sorry for all the animals he tortured.
But I am glad this man is dead. I hope his true hell is the monkeys torturing him and for eternity, please.

When I was young, they'd show us various educational films on a projector. The wire/padded monkey mothers were featured in a few of them and the image of it is still strongly imprinted in my mind. A lot of us kids thought this was terrible and I remember hoping that when the experiment was done, they'd return the babies to their mothers. The films never even mentioned Harlow's other sick experiments. This is truly horrific information.

The part about this that scared me the most is that his backstories sounds a lot like my own...
Neglectful and abusive parents... cast out by peers... came up with a fantasy world to get lost in... highly intelligent... developed a love for poetry...
What I'm asking myself is... why did this man become so cold? Am I this way too, without realising? Or is there something that makes some more prone to becoming cold than others?
I should probably stop thinking about this...

Unless you find yourself driven to torture monkeys to validate your trauma, I don't think you need to worry about becoming like him. Neither he nor you could help the issues you developed, but at a certain point he chose to do this with his pain, and you didn't. Damage doesn't make you a monster. I doubt he ever asked himself the questions that you're asking yourself, and that alone makes you very different.

I feel like his personal life influenced a ton of his work ethics. After he became depressed, his experiments became more twisted. It seems as if he wanted to inflict the pain he was feeling on these poor monkeys. He was certainly a bitter person.

@Recovering Soul actually there has been quite a bit of research that shows how the mother monkeys react after they have been separated from their babies!! Most macaque moms protest quite fiercely in the beginning but almost always return to baseline behavior within 48 hours. In other words, by nature, like most animals the mom will protect her baby and raise hell but after a day or two she could not really care less!

Interesting how much his own life dictated his monkey experiments. It's as of first he tried to understand his own childhood, then his own depression after his wife died. He had to have known after the 1st experiments that depression was the most likely the outcome of deprivation...he could have even guessed the outcome of the pit of despair. The longer the despair...the longer/more lasting the damage. Yet, did this have any outcome on prenatal treatment? Post partum depression? Doesn't seem like it. I'd love to know when attachment theory came about in comparison to harlows experiment.

I've heard about this but I never knew the details, it's important to know that this happened. I'm personally really torn because how else would this psychological research have happened? You can't use humans, that would be worse. It's the same conundrum as any animal testing - we have to do it in order to make sure things are safe for humans or learn important medical things that can save many human lives. But I really really wish it wasn't necessary, and think it should only be used if absolutely necessary, not just cheaper.

I have my degree in Psychology- Human Behavior and I studied some of these experiments. It was extremely heart breaking. Some scientists also completed the same experiments on orphaned human babies. It is SO barbaric some of these scientists were and can be today. The experiments on the human babies was stopped due to the horrific treatment and outcome. They also need to make it illegal to torture ANY animal even if it is an "interest" in science. Cruel is cruel!! There is no excuse!!

This guy was demented. I went through a phase when I was younger, where I was cruel, very cruel. Torture and killing of bugs mainly. Some would say- so what they're bugs. But I disagree, and feel sorry for my actions. I too was very depressed, and angry at nothing/everything. Infact I scare myself because I still have wanting to torture things and I don't know why. So I very much do understand what/ why this guy wanted to perform these experiments. I would be very excited to perform these as well so I understand him, but what I don't understand is his lack of empathy. It's what would keep me from doing this kind of stuff.

As horrifying as his experiments were, he did succeed in reversing some very major tenets of his age's understanding of psychology and deepening our understanding overall. I can call them cruel--and they absolutely were--but unlike some experiments I can't say that he was taking a paycheck to simply slam animals against the wall & study the shapes of the dents.

I know alot of people like to hate these monkey mothers for what they did, especially since their history is similar to what some humans had to go through yet some psychologically recovered and never hurt people. I however personally think other animals just work differently (mental wise) than us. While we humans can recover from psychological break just with our own mental might, for animals who knows if they can recover from a psychological break on their own thanks to lower sapience. These tortured monkey mothers were horrific and I can't excuse their behavior, but I am more inclined to blame the researchers for letting this cruel experiment happen since they did torture these innocent animals to the point they became insane psychopaths. In a situation where humans turned animals violent and hurt others, I am more inclined to blame humans.

Well back then they had a very limited knowledge of the human (or monkey) brain. They didnt really understand anything at all other than the brain existed and it regulated the body, they didnt understand that it was the one regulating emotions too, not the heart.
