Lilly
Pink.Martini Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lilly comes when you stop to call her
Lilly runs when you look away
Lilly leaves kisses on your collar
Lilly, Lilly, Lilly, Lilly, stay!

Lilly comes when you stop to call her
Lilly runs when you look away
Lilly leaves kisses on your collar
Lilly, Lilly, Lilly, Lilly, stay!

One day she passed him by
A twinkle in her eye
He said " she was meant for me!"
But when he turned around
He lost what he had found
Oh where can his Lilly be?

Lilly comes when you stop to call her
Lilly runs when you look away
Lilly leaves kisses on your collar
Lilly, Lilly, Lilly, Lilly, stay!

He searched the city streets
He tempted her with treats
But nobody stopped to taste them
Some are in his pocket
Some are in a locket
He couldn't bring himself to waste them

Ever since she's gone
Some days he can't go on
She runined for another
Pressed up against the glass
He prays that she will pass
Now he's living with his mother

Lilly comes when you stop to call her
Lilly runs when you look away
Lilly leaves kisses on your collar
Lilly, Lilly, Lilly, Lilly, stay!

Lilly comes when you stop to call her
Lilly runs when you look away
Lilly leaves kisses on your collar
Lilly, Lilly, Lilly, Lilly, stay!

Stay, stay, stay, stay

Overall Meaning

The song "Lilly" by Pink Martini revolves around the theme of a man's search for his lost pet dog named Lilly. The first stanza talks about how Lilly comes when the man calls her, but runs away when he looks away. This line almost seems like a metaphor for how certain things in life come to you when you pay attention but are lost when you're not looking. The second verse describes how the man lost Lilly and how he can't seem to recover from it. He has been searching the streets of the city and offering treats, but nothing seems to work. He even carries a locket with him, which has some of Lilly's treats in it but can't bring himself to waste them.

The chorus "Lilly comes when you stop to call her, Lilly runs when you look away, Lilly leaves kisses on your collar, Lilly, Lilly, Lilly, Lilly, stay!" is a desperate plea to Lilly to come back and stay with her owner. The last verse talks about how Lilly's absence has ruined the man and how he's living with his mother. He prays that one day he will see her again but knows that it's unlikely. The song's overall theme seems to tie into how someone's life can be shattered by losing something or someone they hold dear, and they can't recover from it.

My dog is also named Lily and she is a terrier mix - or as I like to say, she is a Terror-ier!! Very smart and very stubborn - not the greatest combo in a dog. But the "Lilly, Lilly, Lilly, Lilly, Lilly, stay" line gets me every time.

My mother was named "Lilly" and the "Oma" who raised me (while all other family adults were away at work),
