I spent a stint in a mental hospital. They took away our phones and mp3 players, so all our music came from an old radio. I remember one of my last days at the hospital before they released me, I was sitting in one of the activity rooms with a schizophrenic man I could barely understand. The radio was on, and Brain Damage/Eclipse came on. The irony was rich and not lost on me, but then a beautiful thing happened; the schizophrenic man started to sing along to the song. I joined him, and there was a moment. A moment when I thought everything was going to be okay. It was bittersweet, and I wept a bit. I've been out of the hospital for several months now, and I still struggle, but every time I hear these two songs played together I feel a glimmer of hope. It's bittersweet and small, but it's there.

I like to think that the entirety of our experiences as individuals are all part of a greater order, "in tune" with all of existence. And at times when we feel overwhelmed with all that's described in Eclipse, it's easy to forget that. We can't see because "the sun is eclipsed by the moon" but the thing about eclipses is that they're temporary. Through some patience and a bit of time, perhaps we will begin to see how "everything under the sun is in tune".

My 86 year old dad passed tonight and he just loved Pink Floyd even at his advanced age. I've heard it was a common medical practice in the 60s and perhaps early 70s to treat any sort of "brain damage" or insanity/mental illness to perform a lobotomy and the purpose of lobotomy is to severe the frontal lobe, in some ways that contain a lot of the "core" of us, from the rest of the brain. So a person who had a lobotomy performed on him is theoretically incapable of making anymore decision for themselves, they are essentially gone after that point to where they exist simply as hollow shells. And that's what helps make this part of the song so disturbing to me: "You raise the blade. . .you rearrange me until I'm sane. You lock the door and throw away the key. There's someone in my head, but it's not me." Lobotomy is no short part a certain kind of death.

"Floyd" was finally deemed too insane, too fickle, too "uncooperative" to exist in the world when it was the world who did him ugly, the world who turned a normal sane person into the insanity in the first place. The doctors just wanted him to cooperate, to be a good little boy, so they put the blade in so he would behave. And by performing the lobotomy, everything that was "Floyd" ceased to exist, any last light inside of him was extinguished, his body, his own mind, his own self was hijacked and destroyed to where he could be controlled, tamed to cooperate with society. And he can do nothing except "watch" while he is a puppet inside a wooden body performing actions and behaviors he can no longer understand nor control, "watch" while this "other person" controls him and lives his own life, his voice muted and forever silenced, "You shout but no one seems to hear. . ."

i had heavy anxiety attacks for several weeks like every night.
(with heavy i mean i woke up in a state of pure horror and ran out of the house in the middle of the night wearing only boxers and a shirt..)

I made some sort of a ritual to put myself together while being in fear of dying ,(i really thought i go insane)

Control breathing, put something cold on my forehead, going for a walk, making a tea and final step was listening music.
When i heard this song i actually started crying while laughing.
I had goosebumps all over my body and it felt like all the anxiety just swept away.
It was so strange and that i almost had another panic attack because it felt so strange xD
But eventually it got better and now everytime i feel like getting an anxiety attack i listen to this sing to bring me back to that experience and it helps!

So yeah if you couldn't tell Brain Damage is about mental illness and Eclipse is about humanity in general. The Dark Side of the Moon is supposed to refer to lunacy, as does this album refer to it, and what drives people to it (absence of time and money) and the way we set social normality on people and dictate how we should feel and act. If we are all the Moon, then those creeping thoughts, and the ones consumed by them, are the Dark Side.

The final line is a suggestion that we are all lunatics, that everyone is what we call mentally ill (e.g. the delusion of society).

As undeniably fantastic of a song as "Money" is, I think this pair is the best piece in the entire album, and it may be the songs that embody everything Pink Floyd is perfectly: extremely dark and depressed, yet unshakably convinced that joy is right around the corner and passionately wanting to reach and protect it, like trying to claw their way out of a pit with the mindless hope only someone truly desperate can feel.

One night I was coming back home walking on the street listening to the full album, and then this music started and I looked up and the moon was full and bright right over me, and I was walking, like, towards it, and everything was suddenly so sublime and different, the colors, the lights, the smells, and for 2 minutes I was able to understood and feel something wich I am not sure how to describe, and now it lives in my memory

My aunt struggled with mental illness her entire life. She ended up dying in early 2023. Much of my family didn't like her for some reason, but she was a good person and one of the only family members that made me feel understood. I also struggle with my mental health, same conditions as her, and she didn't make me feel so alone in the world with it.

I don’t want to admit that these two tracks together are my favorite on the entire album, but there just couldn’t have been any better way to conclude it. Hearing the line “I’ll see you on the Dark Side of the Moon” for the first time is the most satisfying thing ever.
