Pich Black Afro's style is similar to that of American MC's, citing Redman as an influence, but raps in English, Zulu and a slangy mixture of different languages called totsi taal.
He became a favourite on the club scene often playing with 'The Native Huts Allstars' and was eventually discovered by DJ Cleo during a stint doing "Rap Activity Jams" on YFM radio. His first album was produced by Cleo and released in 2005, selling 50,000 copies in South Africa. This made 'Styling Gel' the biggest ever selling African Hip Hop album (at the time). He followed this with "Split Enz" in 2006.
In 2006, Pitch Black Afro was accused of assaulting a fan and causing damage to property in a Johannesburg mall.

Azingicavi kahle lezi
Thank you, dankie, sengibongile daar
Hip-Hop ndabezitha yin'indaba sigraduate-a

Azingicavi kahle lezi
The lyrics to Pitch Black Afro's song Introduction are in a mix of English and Zulu. The first line, "Shay'inumber entsha," means "something new has come." The next line, "Azingicavi kahle lezi," translates to "I'm not used to this." The lyrics then switch to English as the artist thanks his fans and acknowledges his achievement as a "graduate" in the world of Hip-Hop. He refers to himself as an "actor," "defender," and "funza generator" in this space. The artist then criticizes those who overcomplicate things in the music industry and calls for a focus on what's truly important, such as generating meaningful lyrics and being a great communicator.
